Deranged holiday rental food hack: there’s no sugar and the curry I’m making needed both a sweet lift and more sour. Splash of grapefruit squash? Fuck it, why not.

We have discovered a planet. There's an animal there that might be related to a hippopotamus with beautiful feet. We could venture there by bumble-boat. Will you go there with me?

Curious as to what the slogans that Neem *rejected* for this year’s line were.

I feel like Lichtenstein’s work should be displayed, wherever possible, alongside one of Duchamp’s urinals so the curation can ask “who was really taking the piss?”

This is the kind of thing where, when it comes back from a market research focus group the second time, you end up having a twenty minute meeting about how the hell you’re going to break it to the client that they might as well pack up their entire brand and walk into the sea.

At a pedestrian crossing a prim looking uniformed schoolboy double takes at my bright purple loafers and flashes a smirk that could be anything from “WTF??” to “sick!”, then cycles past, his backpack covered in metal band patches and badges.

21°C and blazing sun on the second of October. I know the sad slow apocalypse is the more pressing concern, but I would also like to get a few days of tweed jackets in before we go Full Overcoat.

Damn. Internalising the failure states of the system to the point of demanding they be performed as a virtue is like a crude joke I'd make about right wing politics after three glasses of wine.

Yep. I was about to say "I'm not complaining", a sentiment undermined somewhat by being in the middle of a thread where I am quite literally complaining... It's all good stuff.

Oof. Yeah. Fingers crossed! Mine's mostly work travel and gigs/shows I forgot I'd booked. Which is Good! But means more time on the late trains back from London to Cambridge than is really ideal.

Really quite struck by the levels of disrespect on show here: the private party for the rich taking precedence, the failure to inform people on time, the gal to let them travel to London and queue. That 1381 blockbuster cannot come in cinemas soon enough.

I do wonder if maybe the centrists actually have never had it spelled out to them: no, there is not a group you can find to throw under the bus that progressives will not get mad at you for harming. That’s the point.

Of course now I ~am~ a sad middle aged man, so I'm delighted not to have changed my mind completely and gone all in on saying "the aforementioned". But, well, somewhere around that dead-eyed data golem's "I'm CEO, bitch" business cards was one hell of an over-steer.

I remember first joining the (tech, obvs, look at me) workforce, saying something like "Fuck 'professionalism' it's just a way for sad middle aged men to get us to behave in ways they hoped would make their dads love them", and while I stand by some of that, also: wasn't I a right little wanker.

Roger @rogger.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Like "etiquette" those failure modes still exist, and are icky, and ossify to classism. But when you look at things like Bluesky devs having a petulant meltdown at users, or cringily chummy corporate comms in a crisis, you do start to value "bland with well-defined edges".
110
Roger @rogger.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Onboarding comms for NewJob are refreshingly starchy and formal. I've done a real 180 "Professionalism" lately. Too focused on its failure modes (conservatism, deference, access), I undervalued how nice it is to: a) have a default playbook, and b) not feel like your leadership are teenage edgelords

I think so? They may have some secret knowledge graph sauce, but it's aways looked to me like the value prop was "we know you can't unlock the opex to actually connect these systems, but you can give us the capex to stick a data warehouse between them and you"

Working in a book shop years ago people would often flag you down asking "do you work here?", and I just could not stop myself saying "Well, 'work' is a bit strong, but what can I do for you?" Across three years I got maybe two laughs and one manager complaint.

This is getting out of hand. When I see or someone mentions a book that sounds interesting, I write it down to look up later. This is just stuff I've added to the list this year, ones I bought crossed out. Which is categorically not all the ones I bought...

It's fun. Maybe a little too keen to make sure the reader knows it knows the church has Done Some Bad Shit, but manages to look at types of faith and the standard god vs church stuff in a not overly hackneyed way.

Just finished The Salt King (uk.bookshop.org/p/books/the-...) and it might be the best thing I've read so far this year. Obviously it had me at stirring old gods and an archly neurotic priest, but it's backed with lovely little ideas and largely set in a kind of deep-time-relic fenland mining town.
