This is getting out of hand. When I see or someone mentions a book that sounds interesting, I write it down to look up later. This is just stuff I've added to the list this year, ones I bought crossed out. Which is categorically not all the ones I bought...

Saw a post about this at the weekend, thought it looked cool, placed an order. Never shut up about books you like. We want to know so we can buy them.

I know Glasgow isn't really a big real ale town, but it ~really~ isn't really a big real ale town. Deeply unscientific methodology: CAMRA website, map filtered first to just pubs (i.e. not clubs), second to pubs with cask ale. Their data probably isn't perfect but that's still quite a difference.
A map of central-ish Glasgow covered in what must be at least 150 map pins, each showing a pub, with a note saying there are too many results and 32 are hidden.A map showing central-ish Glasgow, with about 30 pins, each showing a pub.

Millport promising the biggest kick you ever got…
On the shore, a bay curving in the background, is a rock shaped somewhat like a crocodile. The painted face is gilding the lilly somewhat if you ask me, but it’s probably best that nobody did or it wouldn’t be half as amusing.

The river is still today.
A twilight shot of the Cambridge riverside where a row of houses is reflected in the flat still waters as the sky gathers towards a navy dusk.

Sometimes I forget I backed things on Kickstarter and the postman brings me lovely surprises. Sometimes those surprises are a board game that weighs as much as a Doberman and comes with instructions ~for putting it back in the box~

Yup. The entire philosophical project of current tech leaders boils down to “draw a graph showing that whatever I want to do instead of helping is the moral high ground, actually”.

My copy of @anthonycamber.com's new novel Between Two Worlds showed up! One for the SF folks. YA-ish queer romance on a far future generational colony starship with more than a hint of creeping dystopia, and a really interesting idiom.

Wait, YouGov polled “Norman conquest: good or bad?” 🤦 The market research industry does have a problem here. Everyone is nervously defensive about producing frivolous unscientific crap, while reaping marketing/PR value from being as frivolous and crappy as possible. tl;dr - market research:

It’s not her best work, but it’ll scale, it fits the brief. Imagine thinking this was too decadent. It’s like the thing where the Tokyo police had a massive crackdown on Delinquent Yoofs for wearing classic western Ivy styles in ‘64 before the Olympics. Anyway, fashion and food history are great

The Elsa Schiaparelli exhibition at the V&A is well worth a look. Some wonderful pieces. You get a sense of an avant garde experimentalist who knew when to stop at the edges of wearability.

I picked up a copy of Jack the Modernist for the train and, uhh, sure why not…
A picture of a page from a novel, the passage at issue takes the form of scripted dialogue, reading:

BOB: I dreamt 1I was on a game show that gave away sex prizes—the host from Truth or Consequences spun a whee trimmed with blue neon. Shouts and applause. I was an average American, naked, lying in a sling with my legs raised and my feet in stirrups. The stage was an expanse of horizon-less beige linoleum with blue drapes at the wings. A truffle imported from the South of France was inserted into my asshole—a drum roll, scuffing and snorting in the wings-and then—also imported from the South of France-a pig trained to root for truffles-
JACK: Was the host Ralph Edwards, Jack Bailey or Bob barker?
BOB: You're a deep scholar. Is everything good?

…and whatever this was. I feel like this is a numinous but firm expression of ~2018. The last coat tails of the British hotel service quality slide, of people carrying cash, and the end of the rise of bottled water. A crystallisation of calculated low expectations. Thwarted as an add-on.

A nose over 80km total. I’ll be honest, today wasn’t the best. The pebble beach was… undelightful, and the last 3km or so were a slog through tedious bullshit in the rain. But overall it’s been good and the cliff top paths are gothic as fuck.

Little run of houses miles from anywhere on the sea cliff edge, is it? Sacrifices to “She in the Brine” out beyond the sand bar, eh?

So the issue is less that I can’t read maps and more how often I don’t. Which is to say: yes, this is a three kilometre stretch of pebble beach. Cockends.

Yesterday was an odd one. Cracking run along the beach and wetlands then the woodlands between Burnham Market and Wells. But the long stretch round the edge of the salt marshes to Blakeney had that real sense of the etiolated infinite. Almost bleak.
