it might backfire horribly on him but if so, boy is Andy Burnham going out with a bang. Do wonder if that speech could only have been made by someone who was out of Westminster for the madness years & isn't as scared of the public - he's gambling on them still grudgingly respecting conviction

The online far right conspiracy theorists’ obsession with the Fabians - stoked massively by GB News, Talk TV et al - is one of the weirdest, most disturbing things in British politics right now (and that’s saying something) Like a mini British QAnon Must be awful working for Fabians rn

Others will have their say about this, but I think it’s worth pointing out that this - or laundered versions of it - are accepted wisdom amongst a big chunk of our political and media classes and it is simply bad for society when the elites have little or no understanding of *the systems they run*

Apparently it's now ok to tell the public to vote again until they give the right answer. (This is also a very odd *Conservative* take on the 2010-15 coalition, which put the party in office, led to its first majority for 23 years and was the only govt in the last 19 years to complete a full term).

There is, I think, a really good argument to be made that the bit of the income distribution that the Liberal Democrats are winning from the Conservatives are specifically overtaxed (the £100k marginal rate + the end of free childcare). Fixing that costs c£4bn, and might actually raise revenue.

This wouldn't happen in the UK. Reform and the Conservatives have been banning journalists and news organisations they don't approve of for years now and the lobby has done absolutely nothing about it

This is all consistent with our analysis for @news.sky.com six months ago - Conservatives and Reform supporters are distinct groups who won't necessarily get behind the other party on their 'side' (not least because not all Reform voters are on the economic right).

Analysis from Sky News finds Reform is leading the "battle for the right" - but voters are not keen on a pact with the Conservatives.

What this post really crystallised for me is the extent to which the different global conflicts are merging around key chokepoints around the Med, Red Sea, Caspian Sea and Indian Ocean. Global trade has shown remarkable resillience but it gets to the point where there are too many chokepoints.

The thing that does continue to fascinate me about Trump, and a lot of similar political grifters, is the power they have to give people the sense of "I will be the one special guy/group he doesn't betray". It's just so undignified.

With alt text. I hope to see more.
A pen & ink drawing on plain paper.

Optimus Prime is on his knees, blocking a group of 4 ICE agents with his forearm from approaching a small group of American civillians. One of the ICE agents is pushing ineffectually against his arm, while two more have opened fire, equally ineffectually, at Prime's head. The last agent is pointing at Prime's face and yelling something.

Optimus looks mildly annoyed. The civillians look like a woman, a teenager, and a child with a teddy bear. One of them is holding a US flag on a pole.

The backlash against sanctions on West Bank settlers (usually without trying to defend their behaviour because it's indefensible) is pretty dismaying to be honest. The idea seems to be that nobody in Israel should ever face any consequences for anything they do. That's a moral dead zone

On Andy Burnham's sudden bout of shyness. thecritic.co.uk/sanc...
The close of his statement was an appeal to our better natures. If we were going to ask Israelis and Palestinians to live side-by-side, he said, Britain also had to be a place where “people of all faiths and none have a right to live without prejudice or fear.” Listening to him was Andy Burnham, who has been strangely absent from our public debate for the last few days. In August, we couldn’t move for social media clips from the prime minister, standing on a ladder to discuss his first job, or sitting in a pub to rate bar snacks. But faced with masked thugs trying to shut down British ports over the weekend, Burnham seems to have lost the password for his phone. For a decade now, Britain has had a series of leaders apparently paralysed by the fear that if they say that racism is bad, they’ll be voted out. It would be nice to get one who had a slightly higher opinion of us.
