Honestly, I think a lot of this comes out of spaces and situations where intentionally reading 'the enemy' - be that a high school rival, a political outsider, another academic, whatever - in bad faith is rewarded as a display of group solidarity, a demonstration of belonging through hate.

The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context. I've been a public educator for over 20 years and I have never, ever seen it this bad.

It’s like he asked ChatGPT “draft a message perfectly tailored to bring out the guillotines”
Bret: Millions of Americans, including me, not only hate the parties but also hate the party for which we typically vote. That means there's a market of the dissatisfied. I hear this all the time among my friends in New York City: They can't believe they're stuck with Zohran Mamdani as mayor, and they felt the same way about Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio before him. But when you ask them if they voted in the primaries, the usual answer is: Uh, no - we were on the Vineyard or in Greece. The point is that it's on them, or us, and the remedy is some civic entrepreneurship, philanthropically funded, to change this.

It is absolute madness to say "they won't come for me" when we know, as a matter of historical fact, that they will. It isn't just morals, its self-interest.

It's funny, Idaho AG Labrador routinely says doctors are being disingenuous when they say the law is unclear about when they can perform an abortion without fear of prosecution, and yet when a judge tries to make it clearer, they say it's too vague and allows for too much room to perform abortions.
The standard varies throughout the opinion’s discussion. Is it as specific as the conditions
identified by the decision—hysterectomies, nerve damage, and the like? Id. Perhaps. But the
opinion refused to provide an “exhaustive” list of conditions warranting abortion. Dkt. 147 at 17.
Is it anything that is not a typical risk? Perhaps. But the opinion even indicates that the risk of
commonly performed cesarean sections could allow for abortion based on potential permanent
damage from a “risk of infection.” Dkt. 147 at 49. What exactly is serious enough and lasting
enough to qualify? The opinion does not say, but instead trusts doctors being paid to perform
abortions to flesh it out.
