If you were a HTM buyer of 5Y USTs from ~2011-2021, you most likely got a negative real return for your troubles (unless you bought right around time shale imploded)

S&P 500 shaking off big 30Y selloffs is nothing new: Different levels, ofc, but the last time the 30Y UST’s 14d RSI was this high (in early 2025), the S&P 500 was also <5% off its high.

Just wondering: In Q2, the market theme was “AI momo bottlenecks to the moon!” (trade gets blown to smithereens at start of Q3) In Q3, the market theme has been “duration is a tire fire” ...

Bessent and Mnuchin are both very memeable (i.e. Mnuch holding the freshly printed bills), but the difference is that Bessent produces quotes that go with the memes.

CAN’T KEEP A GOOD BOTTOM LINE DOWN In late Aug, a L/S portfolio of US stocks with the best vs worst earnings revisions was -5% over the trailing 3M. The factor only does worse when we’re coming out of a recession/growth scare & front-running a broad uptick in EPS revisions.

Cleveland Guardians, with the fourth-best AL record, gets a first-round bye, will play the winner of a series between teams that together were 165-159. The three best teams will fight for one ALCS slot. America in 2026: policy subsidizing heartland mediocrity at the expense of coastal meritocracy.

The last time the S&P 500 was this close to a record (-0.44%) with fewer of its members above their 200d moving averages (51.2%)? March 27, 2000, the day after the index put in its dot com bubble closing peak! (-0.24% with just 34.1% of members above the 200d).
