Wow, this Keir chap is quite the political operator. Forensic, cunning, setting heffalump traps his opponents can’t help walking into. The party should find him a seat. Reckon he might be leadership material.

these portraits are so intriguing. how does this man have £200,000 in savings. why is he so interested in war. why can't he remember how he voted in 2024. how does he square his enthusiastic support for Kemi Badenoch with his support for trans rights.

We need to humiliate and banish crankery from all the mainstream parties of the centre and left. And Labour under Starmer and Burnham is by no means immune from the charge. Antisemitic crankery has been replaced by transphobic crankery (in some cases propagated by the same people!)

I think I just fundamentally believe people are what they do. There is no inherently good or bad person, born or made. Our actions do not leave moral stains on our souls. We must have the agency to stop causing harm. To repair what we can. And to be better people. And I want that for everyone.

These anonymous MPs saying it's 'electoral suicide' to tinker with the triple lock. Exactly the type who got us into this mess: unwilling to lead, unwilling to recognise reality for fear of offending voters, unwilling to solve long-term problems if it presents the slightest short-term risk.

I find it strange that some people refuse to believe this is the way our decentralised culture works now, that it's possible to be completely ignorant of hugely popular things that don't match your tastes and interests. People aren't lying about that because they think it makes them look cool.

Arguably a big difference is that the likes of Milburn have thought through their positions, and thus aren't immune to arguments for compassion or imperfections. Whereas if haven't thought through you just take the posturing hardline surface. A cargo cult where don't know *why* want to be tough.

Lukewarm take: I feel a lot of pessimism about the present is built on not realizing just how bad the past was. Like if you just read a book about poverty in a first-world country in the 1950s it's staggeringly worse than now.

Winston Churchill (inevitably) presented welfare policy in explicitly military terms. Here he is in 1909, when he was a Liberal battling for the "People's Budget".
The greatest danger to the British Empire and to the British people is not to be found among the enormous fleets and armies of the European Continent, nor in the solemn problems of Hindustan … No, it is here in our midst, close at home, close at hand in the vast growing cities of England and Scotland, and in the dwindling and cramped villages of our denuded countryside. It is there you will find the seeds of Imperial ruin and national decay – the unnatural gap between rich and poor, the divorce of the people from the land, the want of proper discipline and training in our youth, the exploitation of boy labour, the physical degeneration which seems to follow so swiftly on civilised poverty … Here are the enemies of Britain. Beware lest they shatter the foundations of her power.
Then look at the other side, look at the forces for good, the moral forces, the spiritual forces, the civic, the scientific, the patriotic forces which make for order and harmony and health and life. Are they not tremendous too? Do we not see them everywhere, in every town, in every class, in every creed, strong forces worthy of Old England, coming to her rescue, fighting for her soul? That is the situation in our country as I see it this afternoon—two great armies evenly matched, locked in fierce conflict with each other all along the line, swaying backwards and forwards in strife—and for my part I am confident that the right will win, that the generous influences will triumph over the selfish influences, that the organising forces will devour the forces of degeneration, and that the British people will emerge triumphant from their struggles to clear the road and lead the march amongst the foremost nations of the world.

Sometimes, on certain policy, the UK public is just wrong and even if a poll showed 90% in favour it would still be wrong. Plunging hundreds of thousands of children into poverty and destitution is one of those.

2) and 3) are intimately linked, in that the BBC (the organisation that really matters in the modern environment) treats 'claims by rival parties' as the operating frame for how it covers everything. The failure from Labour and the Conservatives to say 'this stuff is bad' is really, really bad.

AfD media relations: 61-year-old journalist writing for Politico says she was physically assaulted and dragged to police by an AfD security guard after attempting to talk to the AfD’s lead candidate She was told “mainstream” press were not welcome at the AfD event www.politico.eu/article/ulri...
Beyond the conviviality of the sausage line, the mood can sour fast — as I discovered when I sought to speak with Siegmund in Lützen, only to be told "mainstream" press were not welcome. I was roughly jostled aside, my arm twisted by a musclebound heavy flanking Siegmund, who sported an earpiece and a lavishly tattooed neck.
"Move or I will take you to the police," he barked. We had a short, unproductive debate about the constitutionally guaranteed right to report freely in public places.
Another hard arm twist and shove ensued, ending with me stumbling over a curb and being dragged to a police car. No one seemed much bothered by this.

A large group of co-ordinated, masked men blockading a piece of significant infrastructure is a security threat and should be dealt with as one. There should also be serious questions about why police/intelligence services didn't pick up on it in advance.

I can’t put into words the fury this reporting fills me with. How more indignity must trans people be spoken be subjected to by our national broadcaster?
One patient, Sion Jewell, had been due to have surgery to remove their breasts and had packed to go to hospital, only to be told in a phone call 24 hours before it that it had been called off.
The 29-year-old from Anglesey, who is biologically female, had waited five years from their initial GP referrals and the surgery had been postponed twice already for mental health reasons.
The surgery would be irreversible and would mean, for example, that Jewell would not be able to breastfeed in future.
"When I found out I was heartbroken - I was distraught and completely disheartened," they said.
