Jacob Rees-Mogg has often expressed pride in his father's 1968 Times editorial on Rivers of Blood, titled "An Evil Speech". His recent oppositon to ethnonationalism & hia decision to be vocal about a civic British citizenship + English identity reflect this.

And then the Lib Dems explain their web of conferences, committees, internal democracy. And Laws says the Tories just looked at them like they were mad.

Hey, random crankish white man, there is an actual Palestinian MP in the House of Commons and I can guarantee you she does not support this motion

The open secret re: the Greens is that the UK has a tiny set of full time rabid ‘left-wing’ antisemites who move from org to org trying to turn them into full time monomaniacal antisemites like themselves.

This is tangential but generally I find people in the West have no conception of how many Christians there are in the Middle East and North Africa. Right-wing westerners in particular seem either unaware or wilfully ignorant of the existence of Palestinian and Lebanese Christians, for instance.

One stat I use all the time, there are about as many Christians living in Egypt as there are Jews in the entire world. People who are not Jewish simply don’t understand how few Jews there are in the world (this will happen when half of all Jews were exterminated within living memory).

Then you tell them how many of those Jews in Israel are of Middle East extraction and they just tend to refuse to believe you at all.

One thing I frequently find is that people think “zionists” are like and explicit small right wing/fascist sect of Jews. Because they know nothing about Judaism at all and that’s the frame they bring to it. They are…confused, to find out roughly 45% of the Jews in the entire world live in Israel.

A younger me would have done some partisan crowing over this and thought "great, that's the by-election sewn up" but fundamentally the Green Party exists and will continue to exist as a legitimate repository of votes to my left, and if it's going to do that, it should operate with some hygiene.

seems they’ve ended up with the worst of all worlds, the motion will pass strongly but with most MPs on record opposing it, because there was a total leadership vacuum for months. feel very bad for Jewish Green members and their friends and allies today

I lost friends over antisemitism in Labour. I tried to argue that the fact that people on the right were trying to use antisemitism as a weapon against Labour (and they were, in bad faith) did not mean that antisemitism did not exist in Labour (it did). This argument still echoes.

We need to humiliate and banish crankery from all the mainstream parties of the centre and left. And Labour under Starmer and Burnham is by no means immune from the charge. Antisemitic crankery has been replaced by transphobic crankery (in some cases propagated by the same people!)

I mean, this is a sensible policy but I'm afraid those who are saying it's a useful plank of an electoral strategy are living in a parallel dimension. Yes the current policy is dumb in lots of ways but the number of voters it affects is tiny.

Not exactly a Daniel Sugarman fan, but this is correct. I have Jewish acquaintances on the far-left of Labour – as pro-Palestinian as they come – who belong to the Movement for Progressive Judaism which is definitionally Zionist because it advocates a two-state solution.

That reminds me I've been meaning to make a list of seats I think are actually safe in 2026. Realignment means some are very recent additions, e.g. Canterbury is in all likelihood now a safe seat for Labour.

Apparently it's partly a dispute over overcrowded and run-down buildings, but having been inside multiple lycées I can't imagine it's that bad? School facilities in France tend to be *generic* in terms of design and decoration, but they generally build them with more spare capacity than the UK does

I think RTD eliding 'gender critical' and 'Tory' here is very weird and also very telling about how he sees the world. There are plenty of gay Tories but they're not disproportionately likely to be transphobic? In fact they're often the only Tories in the room sticking up for trans people.

It also suggests that the political economy is all the wrong way round - the culturally conservative re-industrialists should be desperate to rejoin, whilst those keen to stay out should cut industry lose and focus on further boosting our services

Nathan @nwylabour.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
It really is remarkable how resilient UK services exports have been since Brexit. And that arguably makes Rejoin harder: if our trade had completely tanked it would be easier to make the case for grovelling to be let back in.

Yes we mustn't forget that these are mostly white middle class cranks, just as was the case in Labour under Corbyn. They are not at all representative of mainstream British Muslim opinion and we must oppose the right-wing reactionaries who will be keen to claim that they are.

I have gone back and forth on this, but I feel increasingly confident in saying that the idea the Greens could be a 'UKIP of the left', that could nudge Labour towards more progressive stances (on trans rights, immigration etc), was misguided.

This thread is why “you have to vote Polanski to send Labour a message on their xenophobia/transphobia etc” is not simple. For starters, you’ve got a nakedly antisemitic motion as the top priority. If this passes, you can’t ask genuine anti-racists to vote for a party that endorses things like this.

I understand the urge to say 'we should simply not allow this to happen', and I don't disagree with it as an aspiration, but I also think if we continue to rely wholly on state media to transmit progressive messages we're going to come unstuck.

I think this is basically three things: 1) Lib Dem Cllrs who are in non-target seats wondering why they aren't targets. 2) Davey's coalition of seats is just different to what it was pre-2010 and a lot of members want it to be 2005 again. 3) Boredom.

Look maybe a centre-right liberal party just fundamentally doesn't work as a long-term proposition in the UK (@williamjtlane.bsky.social argues this), but the alternative for the Lib Dems which they'd be more comfortable with almost certainly translates to fewer Commons seats than what Davey managed
