Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Let me provide some much-needed context for the series of tweets from 2020 recently published by the Oregonian. This week, I'm being judged for messages I posted for a public audience during Black Lives Matter, the largest mass protest movement in U.S. history.

When I wrote those things on social media, I was outraged like so many Portlanders by the constant stream of anti-Black violence being perpetrated by police departments across the country and the Portland Police Bureau. I was mourning the senseless murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Freddie Grey and countless others at the hands of police. I was part of a community that's been troubled by the Portland Police Bureau's response to our movement. During that period, police officers gassed the entire city and documented more than 6,000 uses of force against protesters, the wall of moms, faith leaders, and Portlanders of all stripes, so much so that the courts had to step in.

The critics want to label my tweets from 2020 as "violence" when we've witnessed actual hundreds of incidents of physical violence resulting in bodily injuries to Portlanders. The movement for Black Lives was not and is not about hatred. It is about a basic respect for human dignity, and a revulsion at the violence and callousness we have all witnessed too many times to count.

So, Chief Bob Day is right, I do have an agenda: protect and expand Portland Street Response, defend the budget against cuts to the non-armed first responders, protect the Office for Community Police Accountability, and push for transparency and accountability. Thousands of Portlanders have been demanding police accountability for decades.

I was elected to scrutinize systems of power, represent the diverse needs of Portlanders, and the ballot initiative for police oversight that more than 80% of Portland voters passed November 2020. I'm concerned that Chief Day seems to expect me and other elected officials to have sterile or supportive views of …

A MESSAGE FROM AARON SCHMAUTZ
Friends -
Last week, a federal court heard our demand for injunctive relief in the counting of signatures for our ballot measure. Unfortunately, Judge Michael Simon ruled against our effort. As a result, our campaign is over for this election. We knew the bar for injunctive relief was high, but believed the harm caused by the lack of transparency and legitimacy in the counting process demanded we continue the fight.
This chapter is now closed - but the urgent need to solve Portland's police staffing crisis remains.
The past few months have been some of the more emotional, challenging, and inspiring I have experienced as a professional. This campaign was powered by real people desperate to see the city we love restored. The opponents to this measure pulled every lever, threw up every wall, and broke every rule to cobble together just enough resistance - within the bureaucracy and on the streets - to prevent a vote. They knew if given a voice and a vote, the majority of Portlanders would demand positive change.as a professional. This campaign was powered by real people desperate to see the city we love restored. Thank you for your financial and moral support, your wisdom, and energy. I am
grateful. And while this is a setback, we should also be energized by the outpouring of grassroots support for our cause. From every financial donation and endorsement to volunteers standing in the rain with ink dripping down pages collecting signatures, I know that our coalition will continue to grow.
For certain, the Portland Police Association and the public servants we represent will continue to lead and show up - everyday. We invested significantly in this effort because it is worth it - your families, neighborhoods and businesses are worth it. In the coming months we will discuss the path forward, in the meantime, let's keep fighting for a safer, better Portland for everyone - together.
With gratitude and thanks,
Aaron Schmautz, President
Portland Police Association
