This measure should demonstrate (to all sides) that there are hard limits to allyship as the only organizing principle. This is a bad idea, badly conceived, and very badly drafted - and some prominent allies (who I will continue to support) should have said so, like a year ago.

I think it’s officially time to freak the fuck about the governor’s race. In the last 3 days, I have spoken with at least half a dozen lifelong urban democrats who say they’re planning on voting for Christine Drazan just to wake the Democratic Party of Oregon up to their discontent.

I despise that it is the left who is constantly seen as being uncompromising and self-righteous when, in my experience, I have never met someone who is more certain of their own moral and intellectual superiority than a centrist arguing for the status quo, and doing so as if that’s being “neutral.”

for all the handwringing about city council drama i don’t think this gets emphasized nearly enough
“Our City Council now, for better or worse, is more representative of Portland,” Valdini said. “It doesn’t always make things easier when a lot of different voices are heard in government.”

“But now you have a City Council that is divided and represents the divisions in Portland. I see this as a success story.”

It has never been more clear why baristas need the backing of a union.
Today, Starbucks announced they’re closing about 250 US stores this week. A small number of these are union stores.

We expect to engage in effects bargaining for every impacted union store, as we have done elsewhere, over the conditions of these closures, including transfers so workers can be placed in another Starbucks store based on their preferences.

But let’s be clear - today’s announcement proves once again that ‘Back to Starbucks’ is nothing more than a betrayal of what workers and customers loved about the company. As Starbucks continues to close stores, violate labor law, hike up our healthcare premiums, and betray its core value of belonging to appease right-wing politicians, the company is moving farther away from everything it once was. Starbucks is becoming unrecognizable under CEO Brian Niccol — and that is why labor allies, elected officials, and customers are all joining together to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a fair union contract. Starbucks leadership is failing the company, and trouble is brewing for Starbucks. When just this month, the country’s most pro-business court of appeals called Starbucks a ‘repeat violator’ of labor law, it’s time for everyone to start paying attention.

* source: Starbucks v. NLRB, 24-60650 (5th Cir. 2026)

It has never been more clear why baristas need the backing of a union. We love our jobs, and we know Starbucks doesn’t run without us, so we’re organizing together to demand a better future and a fair contract.

The first questions we need to be asking of any candidate for any office before any others: - Do you understand the climate science and its implications? - What are you going to do to substantially reduce emissions? - What is your plan to migrate its effects on the most vulnerable in your community?

Is Broadway in Portland an avenue (where it runs north/south in the downtown) or a street (where it runs east/west in NE)? Trick question: it's neither! As far as I can tell, Broadway literally does not have a street suffix in Portland.

The DfT just posted this self-congratulatory propaganda on Facebook. This is horseshit. Battery trains have a very minor role to play as a transition technology, but in the foothills of a seismic energy crisis, swapping one form of energy dependency for another is crap politics and worse planning.
a big photographic poster style picture with the text "Electric or battery electric trains? Battery is better. Here's why." Electric trains are powered by overhead lines or a third rail. Compared to diesel, electric trains are:
1. faster - they accelerate and decelerate quicker
2. quieter - there are no motors, reducing vibrations
3. lighter - increasing capacity, reducing stress on rails
4. emission free - helping us reduce our reliance on dieselBattery-electric trains use the
Overhead lines or a third rail to also charge a battery. They:
Use existing power lines - reducing the need for new infrastructure and allowing investment elsewhere
Avoid complex upgrades - like building new infrastructure on uneven land, which is costly and takes longer
Avoid disruptions to services - caused by infrastructure upgrades & repairsBattery-electric trains can be charged at train stations and on electrified lines.
Trains then run on non-electrified portions of the network.
This technology can help spread the benefits of electric trains to more communities, much sooner.

To the best of my knowledge, Reservoirs 5 & 6 on Mt. Tabor are no longer connected to Portland's water system, and are purely for decoration. I understand keeping the iconic Res. 5, but why are we keeping 6? Why isn't this a park or housing? Isn't it just a giant, stagnant pond currently?

🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.
