People mistakenly believe that unfunded inclusionary zoning is a way to tax developers and rich people to fund subsidized housing for the poor. It is not. In reality, it’s a tax on working and middle class renters. Actual rich people, who overwhelmingly own single family homes, pay nothing at all.

How much did overall fuel costs change from 2025 to 2026? It really depends on the state. Drivers in Oregon & Washington are spending <$40 *more* per month. Drivers in New Mexico & Wyoming are spending >$100 *more* per month. That's because of a combination of gas prices & driving distances.
The typical driver spends $65 more on gas today than a year ago, but cost increases vary by state

You tax things you want less of. It’s why they tax cigarettes. To make it too expensive to bother with that bad habit It is a disgrace this logical fallacy is applied to housing. If you believe in IZ you don’t actually want more housing, you just want certain housing, which prevents other housing

Note to Seattle policymakers who want to expand MHA: The most rigorous study ever done on IZ found that the typical program in CA reduces homebuilding by nearly one third. And all renters pay the price in higher rents caused by the worsened shortage. Unfunded IZ is a regressive policy.

Of particular note for this story: in 2024, @MassDOT widened the roadway near the scene of this homicide. In the 2 years since that project's completion, the number of crashes on Damon Road was nearly double what it was in the two years before the widening project:
A bar chart labeled "crashes on Northampton's Damon Road before and after MassDOT's Damon Road widening project, according to MassDOT's IMPACT database." The chart shows two columns: to the left, a much shorter column for "pre-construction, 7/1/2017 - 9/1/2019", with 70 non-injury crashes and a smaller red section representing 16 injury-causing crashes for a total of 86. To the left is a much taller column labelled "post-construction, 7/1/2024 - 9/1/2026" with 118 non-injury crashes and 30 injury crashes for a total of 148.

For anyone against the Rays deal who wants to use economic reports as evidence, here is some advice a. read the agreement with the city and ask questions, b. make sure the economist has new case studies, c. make the sure the model the economist is using isn't politically biased. I have studied and worked with many of the best economists in the world and I've read most of the studies for and against this. Please don't assume that the public is stupid.

The latest newsletter from @councilorgreen.bsky.social makes me wonder what or whom matters more to @councilordunphy.bsky.social than the city being able to afford anything for the next two decades
The moderates on Council, including Dunphy, shared that they voted no to all amendments because "it's for the negotiating team to handle." Let me be clear: it is a dereliction of our duty as a council to move forward with a process that is away from the public eye. It is a slap in the face to Portlanders to develop a term sheet this way when they'll be the ones paying for it for decades to come.

Councilors Avalos, Morillo, Kanal, Koyama Lane, and sometimes Novick: you all tried to get something better for Portland.

The term sheet as unamended is a very bad deal for Portland. Historically bad. We'll go down in history as setting the standard on how to work over a city. Portland deserved so much more than this.

And let me say it once more for the record, I truly love the Blazers. I see how much Portlanders are connected to this team and what they mean to all of us. That's why I am willing to work for a fair deal and put my best effort forward, but I'm afraid we're headed toward a "deal" that will defund basic City, County, and State services over the next generation, unless Council approves meaningful changes to the term sheet tomorrow.
