Teens doing dumb and dangerous stuff on what are essential electric motorcycles is real and a problem in some places but I'd remind everyone that teens doing dangerous stuff on actual gas-powered motorcyles is the cornerstone of the 50's greaser culture everyone worships now.

i think getting my name on a bench of a bus stop could be a flattering way to be remembered, but i'm personally less interested in my name on the bench itself than the bench existing and serving a bunch of frequent service bus lines i helped fight for

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

"NBA media days are strange events even in normal circumstances, marrying the vibe of the first day of school with Halloween. Players wear full uniforms to pose for pictures, but they also walk around and talk to people wearing slacks...the NBA is a very sophisticated television show"

1) i cannot fathom how cool it would be if Angie Nixon somehow pulled it off in November, rooting for her completely 2) fascinating to see her campaign attempt to merge an unabashedly populist rhetoric with two points for “homeowners rights” against insurance companies and “big corporations”

I think this article is spot on about the lack of deeply affordable (30% AMI) homes in Portland but should have delved deeper into the regulatory & bureaucratic barriers that prevent people from getting into regulated affordable homes. www.wsj.com/real-estate/...

for all the handwringing about city council drama i don’t think this gets emphasized nearly enough
“Our City Council now, for better or worse, is more representative of Portland,” Valdini said. “It doesn’t always make things easier when a lot of different voices are heard in government.”

“But now you have a City Council that is divided and represents the divisions in Portland. I see this as a success story.”

Labbe said much of the criticism was “fear mongering” and described the $16 million set-aside as a tiny share of the city’s overall budget.

“We had $100 million last year of housing money that we realized wasn’t being spent, we had another $10 million in arts tax money that wasn’t used,” Labbe added. “At a time when the mayor is proposing to spend millions to do luxury improvements on the Moda Center, to say that we can’t afford to give people more voice over our existing funds just makes no sense.”
