the press will still pick winners, but they’ll try to mould them back into their own image as thatcherites. you’ve got your fringes of course, but in large part, it’s thatcher’s politics all the way down. once they veer off course, the press badger the government to get back in line or else.

once that was sorted, the press had two options, either actually oppose the dire direction things were going or encourage the thatcherites to go further and burn it all down faster, they (in large part) chose the latter, thanks to the press and parliament being a revolving door.

thatcher was a little like jack welch, she’s one of those “keep going until you’ve sold the copper wire from inside the walls and then keep going after that” types, she molded the tories in her image and didn’t stop until labour had basically become that.

even a lot of tories at one point recognised that better living/working conditions leads to better workers and a more stable society, but partly due to thatcher and her “wet tories” vs “dry tories” factional split in 79 and consolidation of power later we now have nutcases in a death spiral

the press is there to shackle political parties and movements. they blame unions for the collapse of the british car industry, they blame them for how thatcher closed the mines and the tumult that followed. used to be tory lords that owned much of the press, now it’s international capital
