While it shares many of the traits of its American cousin I'd argue that the defining feature of British transphobia (and the reason why its taken such root in establishment circles) is that it basically acts as a stand-in for "and they dared talk back to me, an important person."

What better illustration of the harm this country is willing to inflict upon itself in its everlasting freak-out over immigration than a bunch of thugs terrorizing RNLI volunteers because once in a while they may also save the life of brown-skinned person.

8 years ago, I tweeted side-by-side maps from NASA GISS showing global temperatures in 1976 and 2018 – both hot summers in the UK. It subsequently went viral and was printed in the Daily Mail! The 2026 version is stark. Two locally extreme summers separated by 50 years of global climate change.

I firmly believe that the decision of the post-Johnson Conservative government to try to capitalise on the mess it had made of the asylum system and make "Small Boats" a cypher for all immigration will go down as one of the most corrosive in modern British politics, and that's a crowded field.

Outside of her most famous hits I'd be lying if I said I was super familiar with Dolly Parton's oeuvre but I do think it's nice that an extremely rich person dedicated themselves to something other than being a massive cunt and I think more of them should try it.

There is nothing British pundits love more than to hear all of their received wisdoms repeated back at them and declaring it a brave stand against orthodoxy.
"We live in a time when to question any prevailing orthodoxy will, in many cases, be met with an emotional outpouring. Casting any form of doubt on ADHD will absolutely not be the exception. But Pemberton answers his questions convincingly."

Much like with Jordan Peterson, I cannot get over the way these people will effectively build an entire career out of "science says there can't be trans" but then act as if the radiative forcing of carbon dioxide is a social construct.

Earlier in the summer I presented a figure showing how a comparable weather event to the summer of 1976 would be experienced in a warmer current climate. It would be 3-4°C hotter, with London hitting 38°C. Yesterday, that is exactly what happened.

IMO a focus on things like disposable BBQs that excludes the wider context of a rapidly warming climate is worse than useless because it directly feeds into the conspiracy-cope reaction to climate change that seeks to transform a global crisis into one of individual bad behaviour.

There is apparently an unlimited amount of airtime available to discuss the non-existent "cost of living" benefits of new North Sea oil & gas drilling but the effect of one failed harvest after another on consumer prices? Never mind about that.

Burnham could use this moment to hammer home the threat of climate change and remind people why transitioning away from fossil fuels is so important but no, instead we get this pish. Starmer all over again.

This is the thing: as satisfying as it is to make fun of headbangers in The Telegraph the UK has seen a change of PM during a summer of rolling heatwaves, drought and now fire yet I don't think I've heard a single "serious" figure mention climate once.

Unless Andy Burham & his people have the guts to point out that welfare spending as a percentage of GDP has barely shifted in 30 years and is on the low side by European standards I predict hyper-Starmerisation, and frankly the early signs are not good.
A graph showing the change in spending as a % of GDP of various types of government expenditure over 40 years. Non-pensioner welfare has been roughly at the same level for 30 years. Pensioner welfare has only nudged up a percentage at most. The only substantial increases are in health spending and debt interest.

None of the people who go on about "maxing out" what's left of the UK's North Sea reserves really believe it would do anything to reduce energy bills: the point is stymie in whatever way possible an energy transition that threatens the reach of American Petro-fascism.

Comical really that we had years of squealing about how large numbers of members of the public funding a political party led to extreme and unrepresentative politics, in a way that taking big bungs from billionaires and companies presumably does not
