A male Pileated Woodpecker, a flying pickaxe of a bird with a black body (feathers slightly ruffled), black-and-white neck and head, and bright red crest and "mustache", clings to the side of a dead tree. Behind, somewhat blurred leaves.A few feet high up in the same tree, a female Pileated Woodpecker clings to an even narrower branch. She is very similar to the male, though she lacks the mustache-like marking, and is currently less ruffled.
