Honestly this is the entire problem they HAVE with non cis white men as protagonists (of books, shows, movies, games). Because 'I can't emphasize with that because it's not like me' is what they say right after. Then they assert that everyone ELSE should have to do it, because reasons.

Atwater agrees. The power fantasy of the dogwhistle game for them is the plausible deniability: saying it to your face, knowing you both know exactly what the fuck is being said, but believing they have you pinned down and trapped by the plausible deniability of the manner in which they said it.

Every once in a while I'd search Twitter for "'white couple' commercial". A lot of people get very upset about how it's less common than it once was for there to be a white, straight couple in a commercial. Some of them say outright that they don't like the message that this isn't a "white country".

Tbh I think the significant thing here is a big part of the conservative base chafing against the coded language they've used since the 70s. They're at the point where even Lee Atwater is too subtle. They just want to Come Out And Say It.

It's interesting how when the Republicans are most explicitly racist with their policies and much of their rhetoric, they are most performative trying to appear not racist. 20+ years ago, they would and did use racist charicatures to attack social programs without a second thought.
