AM 1229-512 - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2f7WRGY
A super faint edge-on disk galaxy, and somewhat of an enigma. How it formed like this and how its frontal morphology might appear are subject to speculation, but chances are if we saw it from a sufficiently inclined vantage point, it would be practically invisible beyond its nucleus, assuming what we see is spread out fairly evenly along the disk and not concentrated along some very skinny arms.

Anyway, I'm happy to simply enjoy yet another wonderful variation that nature has given us.

Mathematicians studied knots under "knot theory" for about a quarter of a millenium, but never analysed what kinds of knots humans have actually tied. In this paper we applied knot theory to study human-made knots spanning over ten millennia. Turns out some of our everyday knots are very old.

I run a workshop for parents about how elementary math is taught today AND how our own math stories affect our kids. A parent wrote: “The biggest gift… is that I now see math is creative and full of play!” THIS! What changes for kids when the adults start seeing math differently too? 💖

A tower made of green wooden triangles. Each layer is made of four triangles: three standing on their sides and one flat on the tops of the three points. Each layer uses smaller triangles than the layer below.

Jupiter 2019 Apr 09 (visible) - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2iTG5zx
Some of the latest Jupiter data from the HST joint observation program for the Juno probe. Jupiter here in nearly RGB filters; the equatorial limb areas look a tad bluer than they normally would because the blue channel is a near-uv filter. This also makes the Great Red Spot and some of the cloud bands look a little redder.

This image represents Jupiter as it would have appeared on 2019-04-09 at 14:53:52 UTC.

This image was made thanks to data collected for the following proposal:
Wide Field Coverage for Juno (WFCJ): Jupiter's 2D Wind Field and Cloud Structure

Red: WFC3/UVIS F631N (id9o41izq)
Green: WFC3/UVIS F502N (id9o41j0q)
Blue: WFC3/UVIS F395N (id9o41j1q)

Working on multiplying matrices in #MathsToday #Algebra2 #iTeachMath
A whiteboard showing student
work on multiplying matrices. You can see the arm of a student holding a whiteboard marker pointing to something in the work as they discuss. The whiteboard work includes multiplying a 2x2 matrix by a 2x4, writing the matrix dimensions checking to see if they can be multiplied, and multiplying a 3x1 matrix by a 1x3 matrix.
