Good research is difficult and time-consuming because it is done to *challenge* our assumptions. Synthetic users' only purpose is to allow those assumptions to remain unchallenged. They are not "research but faster." They are "going with your gut, but with extra steps to cover your ass."

There is a lot of "oh dear" to go around in the results of this very thorough Pew study on the issues with synthetic samples, but this strikes me as particularly "oh dear" www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...
AI polling results can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes

In many cases, our AI poll took beliefs or attitudes that are reasonably common among a particular subgroup and portrayed them as nearly ubiquitous. For example, our AI poll would indicate that:

97% of Hispanic adults are at least somewhat likely to follow the World Cup (while the actual share is 43%).

Yet more evidence for the towering heap of proof that synthetic users are bullshit. As with all AI products, they do not improve "productivity" for a task but create an excuse not to do the task. In this case, the task is research. AI participants do not help you do research, but to AVOID research.

Of course, there is also an analogous European Code of Conduct for Research integrity, from ALLEA. It lists similar types of principles: honesty, reliability, respect, and accountability. If we apply these principles conscientiously we arrive at similar conclusions.

Dear @erc.europa.eu , we DO already have common standards & frameworks. 'AI' likes to pose itself as 'special' but we do not need to reinvent the wheel. We already have established codes of conduct for research integrity. We just need to apply them. See below + more resources in thread🧵
Protecting the Ecosystem of Human Knowledge: Five Principles
We must protect and cultivate the ecosystem of human knowledge. AI models can mimic
the appearance of scholarly work, but they are (by construction) unconcerned with truth
— the result is a torrential outpouring of unchecked but convincing-sounding “informa-
tion”. At best, such output is accidentally true, but generally citationless, divorced from
human reasoning and the web of scholarship that it steals from. At worst, it is confidently
wrong. Both outcomes are dangerous to the ecosystem.
Knowledge production is supposed to be safeguarded by (inter)national codes of conduct for research
integrity (ALLEA 2023; KNAW et al. 2018). Such codes forbid, for instance, fabrication of data,
falsification of results, plagiarism, and, generally, distortion of the scientific record. Many argue that
new rules are required to regulate academic AI use, but pre-existing guidelines fit the bill (cf. Tafani

The New F12 Cycle Route between Woerden and Utrecht
Last Thursday, a renewed cycle route, the F12, between Woerden and Utrecht was officially opened by a representative of the Province of Utrecht and councillors from the two cities. The route is about 18 kilometres long and runs entirely through these two municipalities in the province of Utrecht. Thanks to this continuous cycle route, people can now cycle between the two cities more smoothly, safely and comfortably.
