Mrs. Fietser knocked out the grocery run by bike on her lunch hour today. Driving a car just to haul a few bags of food through the neighborhood is incredibly inefficient. A car is simply too big of a tool for the job.

Cycling the new F12 from Woerden to Utrecht, all 18 kilometres of it. A real-time ride along the new route in this week’s BicycleDutch video.

Cycling from Woerden to Utrecht (F12)
As promised in last week’s post, this week we get to ride the new continuous cycle route from Woerden to Utrecht. The F12 is about 18 kilometres long and it took me under an hour to cycle from one end to the other. Since we already discussed the route at length in the previous post and video, I will keep this one a little different.

I want to take a moment to let people know that this is not super new tech. It has existed for years, but more notably in countries that design urban infrastructure to enable people of all ages and abilities, not just the car drivers.

Ginnekenmarkt, Breda in 1974 and today
The top image shows a cobbled square packed with parked cars on all sides, including a Mercedes, a Fiat 500 and a Ford, surrounded by metal railings. Patches of cobbles have been dug up around a central stone water pump. Today the same square, now a packed café terrace. Rows of wicker chairs and tables fill the space where the cars once stood, with people eating and drinking under large furled umbrellas. Mature trees with golden autumn leaves shade the square, and the same stone water pump still stands at the centre.

Great thread. Greetings from... a Netherlands that no longer exists, quite literally. So many modernist buildings from the 60s have been demolished. And also: cars were everywhere! We would take very different pictures today. Emphasising our past more. I don't really know what that says about us...

The New F12 Cycle Route between Woerden and Utrecht
Last Thursday, a renewed cycle route, the F12, between Woerden and Utrecht was officially opened by a representative of the Province of Utrecht and councillors from the two cities. The route is about 18 kilometres long and runs entirely through these two municipalities in the province of Utrecht. Thanks to this continuous cycle route, people can now cycle between the two cities more smoothly, safely and comfortably.

The new filter for motor traffic in Utrecht (Catharijnesingel) does not work flawlessly yet. It has been in effect from today. A lot of drivers overlook or ignore the signs, but it is already much less busy. Good for safety on the major crossing for walking and cycling just north of the filter.

Vredenburg: A Busy Street Without the Cars
Objectively, Vredenburg in Utrecht is a very busy street. And yet, when I give guided tours, some people keep telling me that I have no idea what a really busy street looks like. What do they mean? Probably that, in their mind, a street cannot be busy when it does not have private cars. There aren't any here now. But it wasn’t always like this.

For decades, we’ve been told growing cities require more traffic, noise and asphalt. But places like Delft prove that we can move more with less, while gaining beauty, safety, sociability and flexibility. That’s what curbing traffic looks like: not the absence of movement, but the abundance of life.
In this single frame of Delft, a young couple cycles effortlessly on a canal-side path. A tram glides by in the background. Flowers spill into the foreground. Church spires punctuate the skyline. No single mode dominates the scene; each has been given its own space to thrive.

Gasoline is nearly $10/gallon in the Netherlands, but the difference between them and us is that they've connected their neighborhoods, cities, and regions with multiple options for efficient, accessible, and affordable transportation. The US went cars-for-everything and got us to where we are now.
