Glad to see MPs have already recognised the role that can be played by structured public deliberation on alternatives to Westminster’s broken electoral system. I hope the Commission that Burnham sets up includes this key aspect of building legitimacy of the proposal put to a referendum.

We need to call this government what it is: a government of deprivation in favour of corporate interest and greed. There's no provable growth here; just an entrenchment of the same "rich get richer" entitlement. We deserve so much better and people need to learn how economies actually work.

When @graemeedgeler.bsky.social says you're "the worst Speaker I can recall" you know it's bad. Gerry Brownlee, Parliament's ineffectual policeman, wraps up chaotic term newsroom.co.nz/2026/09/24/g...
Brownlee is the worst Speaker I can recall. A single ruling during the committee stage of the fast-track law is sufficient for him to earn this title. A basic and long-standing rule in the House is that the admissibility of amendments in the Committee of the Whole is a decision for the Chair and that this will not be interfered with by the Speaker. The Chair ruled out National’s list of projects to add to the law. The Government asked for the Speaker to be recalled, and to get the government out of a jam, the Speaker intervened, undermining the Chair and decades of practice, just so the Government didn’t have to wait to use the Parliamentary options open to them. Completely unjustified and the worst Parliamentary action I can recall a Speaker taking.
