It’s not just ‘troubling’, it’s a breach of s 17(2) of the Public Records Act, which is an offence under s 61 of that Act. Parties promising to ‘strengthen the OIA’ must face the fact that the Chief Archivist can’t or won’t do the job of ensuring compliance, & transfer it to an Info Commissioner.

Last council elections there were quite a few candidates elected unopposed around the country. I'd like a system where the nomination period is extended if there's only one candidate by the normal deadline. So many people think "I'm sure someone will run, I don't need to" and then it's too late.

A government surplus is an economically disastrous thing for a government to achieve. A government shouldn't be shrinking the money supply. We need better words than "surplus" and "deficit" for government because people associate entirely wrong connotations to these words.

This is really interesting, because the duty to ‘create & maintain’ records in the Public Records Act doesn’t just apply to departments. It also applies to ministers, and this minister is admitting that she broke the law. Chief Archivist seems to be MIA. #nzpol
Screenshot from the RNZ article in the quoted post:
“When this was put to the minister's office, she simply pointed to the letter sent to Holloway, specifically:
"... curriculum development is an iterative process, therefore, my ability to provide you with detailed information regarding point-in-time feedback or content changes proposed to the draft Years 7-13 English Learning Area is necessarily limited.
"Feedback is often provided verbally via mechanisms such as regular agency meetings with officials and/or facilitated sessions with contributing groups that are not formally minuted.”

'We have no fish, there are zero fishes in our pond, and this Hager fellow is just trying to catch the fish we say we haven't got, but we're too smart, we're not falling for that old trick'
Hager has now challenged Williams and co-founder David Farrar to waive confidentiality or privilege that could prevent documents relating to the alleged complaint or settlement from being released.

“If the complaint letter and subsequent settlement do not exist, as Jordan Williams and David Farrar claim, then they will have no problem publicly waiving any and all rights they have to any claims of confidentiality, non-disclosure, or privilege, in relation to them,” Hager said.

A spokesman for the Taxpayers’ Union said “we have been clear that no such settlement exists”.

“Asking us to waive confidentiality over documents we say do not exist is simply a fishing expedition on Hager’s part.”

This is absolutely true. Centrist politicians have essentially fetishised "tough choices" into being an end in itself. If you don't have to throw someone under the bus to achieve some broader strategic goal (even if you're not certain what that goal is), it's not grown-up politics.
