It looks like I'm going to have a pretty bad, no good, stressful as heck week, so I will be doubling-down on posting about my silly crafts in order to feel anchored to something. I will be seeking out and praising all of your creative endeavours too, so you'd better get to posting about them.

441) Ghostbot. If you're worried your house may be haunted, deploy this spooky pal to patrol the area. If it meets any ghosts, it will befriend them and keep them away from you so you can get a good night's sleep. #SmallRobotsRemonstered #Halloween
A scene of what seems to be a long, receeding hallway in a grand house of some kind. The wooden floor has a patterned, slightly threadbare carpet running along its centre, which is rucked up a little partway down. All along the walls are framed portraits of people that look, broadly speaking, like 18th Century English aristocrats. The hallway gets darker the further away from the frame it is, with bands of shadow overlaying the shading on the objects. In the centre of the image is Ghostbot: a hovering robot like a sheet draped over something round, with a smiling face on the front. It is at a slight angle as it drifts down the hall, and its body is transparent, revealing the detail of the scene behind it. The Small Robots Remonstered logo in the bottom right is similarly shaded.

And, as I wrote over a year ago, this kind of ethnographical skull-measuring will always lead to outright racism and - in the attempt - utter absurdity. www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle-co...
When, this week, the Telegraph printed a rabidly scaremongering report that “White British people will be a minority in 40 years”, they clarified this cohort as “the white British share of the population — defined as people who do not have an immigrant parent”.

Leaving aside how garbled that formulation is — there are millions of non-white Brits who meet that definition perfectly — it carried with it a parallel consequence. I myself do not have an immigrant parent.

In fact, every single pale and freckled ancestor of mine since 1800, Irish farmers to a soul, was born and raised in something called the United Kingdom. This is true for a large number of Irish people in the North. And since the late Prince Philip was himself a Greek immigrant, it gives me great pleasure to point out that they’d settled on a definition of ‘White British’ which includes Gerry Adams but excludes King Charles III.

Meanwhile that same rent reduction would save renters £2400 per year and govt £2bn per year in housing benefit spend. It's hard to think of any other policy that could deliver such meaningful relief for households most at risk in the current cost of living crisis, whilst SAVING THE GOVT MONEY!

Opponents of rent controls typically argue that rent controls would lead to landlords selling up. Of course that presents risks. But it also presents a historic opportunity. Because when a landlord sells, the home does not vanish – only the owner changes!

For 30 yrs these supernormal returns and eye-watering margins have fuelled a Buy to Let frenzy: landlords outbidding first-time buyers & pushing up house prices, rather than using their savings to invest in UK productive capacity. Find me an economist who'd call that healthy!

Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

Why is this ruinous and uncorrected tory austerity rarely discussed?
During the 2010s, councils' overall core funding per person fell by 26% in real terms, on average, with higher council tax revenues only partially offsetting a 46% fall in funding from central government. But these cuts affected areas differently: in the most deprived tenth of councils, funding per person fell by 35%, compared with 15% in the least deprived areas. Councils in the North and London were also relatively harder hit.

This is absolutely true. Centrist politicians have essentially fetishised "tough choices" into being an end in itself. If you don't have to throw someone under the bus to achieve some broader strategic goal (even if you're not certain what that goal is), it's not grown-up politics.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a horseshoe crab watches as a variety of prehistoric creatures swim towards an ethereal light. An ammonite calls back to the crab, “come on, horseshoe crab! We’re all evolving!” Panel 2: the horseshoe crab stays in position and replies, “nahh that’s crazy” Panel 3: the horseshoe crab is superimposed in front of a future premonition: a rather miserable-looking human slouched in the glow of a desktop computer. A lot to be said about this, but one thing that stands out immediately is how the far right understands safety not as something owed to everyone but as something controlled and distributed through hierarchy. Whose safety matters, and the ways in which it matters, is contingent on their place in it.
