Lol. “Who shall we appoint as minister for all these matters relating to children?” “How about this guy? He’s never spoken to a child before; in fact, he doesn’t even realise they’re human.” “Perfect!”

Foggy! Or misty. Not sure what the boundary is between the two 😶‍🌫️
View from a high window. Near the foreground a slightly hazy cedar tree is showing touches of brown among its dark green needles. Further away, an old, tall sycamore is ghost-like in the fog. The sky above is uniformly grey.

Years ago I knew a guy who made a decent living busking on the bagpipes in the streets of Edinburgh, all dressed up in the kilt and stuff. American tourists were particularly generous. He was from Leicester; no connection to Scotland whatsoever.

seeing conservative men debate how to dress online is very funny. can't dress up or wear interesting casualwear bc you've made any visible interest in dress to be a sign of homosexuality. but you feel the need to dress better bc you've linked dress to respectability. a prison of your own making.

As someone mentioned a few months ago, a child needs to see and interact with 1–3 cats to know what cats are. An algorithm needs thousands and thousands of images of multiple cats to be able to identify a cat. Those aren’t the same process.

This was in the mid-1960s and I was too young to properly remember it now. TBH I wouldn’t be overly surprised to discover that my older siblings caused it by winding me up for a laugh, telling me he was going to come out of the telly and lock me up for being naughty. Kids, eh?

The thing is, we were an utterly respectable family who never had any official dealings with the law. The next door neighbour was a copper. One of my Dad’s best friends was a copper. I was taught to respect and trust the police. But Jack Warner’s face came on the screen and I ran for cover.

PC George Dixon in b&w touches the rim of his helmet in a casual salute: “Evening all.” His piece to camera at the start of every episode of Dixon of Dock Green used to have me hiding behind the sofa in a way Doctor Who? never managed. Instinctive reaction of a Scouse kid seeing a copper, I suppose.

I don’t think I’m the only person who will appreciate this
Triangular diagram labelled The Introvert
Hierarchy of Needs.

Top: Self-actualisation - A completely empty house. An arrow pointing to the house says “Nobody needs anything. Nobody is coming home for hours. Phone on silent.”

The next level is Esteem - Plans getting cancelled. An arrow here says “‘Sorry, we're going to have to rearrange.’ Oh no. That's terrible. I'm devastated.”

Next level: Belonging - One person you actually like. No group chat. No networking. No "let's go round and introduce ourselves." Just one person you can talk absolute shit with.

Fourth level: Safety - An escape route. Own car. End seat. Knowing exactly when the event finishes. A believable reason to leave early.

Bottom of pyramid: Physiological needs - Being left the fuck alone for a bit. Food. Water. Sleep. 45 minutes where nobody speaks to you.

Some scams are easier to spot than others. That said, we get these semi-regularly and they are only getting more focused and custom-tailored, so be careful writers! And, no, we didn’t reply, but it was super-tempting.
Text from a scam email message which reads:

Hi Arthur C. Clarke,

I recently came across 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 25th Anniversary Edition, and wanted to reach out.

I’ve been connecting with authors whose books are available to readers but may not be reaching as many new audiences as they could.

I’m curious how has your experience been with book visibility and reaching new readers? And have you considered exploring new ways to promote your book or expand its reach to additional platforms?

I’d genuinely be interested in hearing your thoughts and experience.

Renton makes much the same point in Trainspotting:
Mark "Rent-boy" Renton: [narrates] When you're on junk you have only one worry: scoring. When you're off it you are suddenly obliged to worry about all sorts of other shite. Got no money: can't get pissed. Got money: drinking too much. Can't get a bird: no chance of a ride. Got a bird: too much hassle. You have to worry about bills, about food, about some football team that never fucking wins, about human relationships and all the things that really don't matter when you've got a sincere and truthful junk habit.

History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
Simon Clarke

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

I went to the surgery for my flu jab at lunchtime and on the way back, I was accosted by this ruffian in the park 🐿️
A sturdy squirrel stands in rough grass, a few fallen leaves around it. It’s squatting on its haunches with its front paws, slightly apart, resting on the ground, and it's staring directly up into the camera with a rather confrontational expression. Its tail is curled up its back, the end curling backwards away from its head in a fine furry display.
