That means approaching pandemic prevention with a mix of evidence-based ecosystem interventions where we can support them, and investment in health systems. We could stop cutting down rainforest tomorrow, and the world's poor would still suffer from spillover as a health justice issue.

To thread the needle on the nuance here: we detect an unequivocal, but not universal, anthropogenic fingerprint. Human activities are contributing to the emergence of different diseases in different ways, and important drivers have much narrower effects than are often claimed.

What's behind this tidal wave of epidemics? In the largest study ever conducted on emerging infectious diseases, we show that the popular explanation - "our relationship with nature is out of balance" - doesn't hold up. Out now in Nature, after half a decade of work: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

completed my first ever triathlon (just a super sprint distance one, NOT a full grown-up distance) yesterday and still feel pretty fkn stoked/proud about it today. had some brain fog the first half of the day and still a little sore, but nowhere near what I expected.

🚨 NEW: Biodiversity monitoring can guide surveillance for emerging pathogens. In a new PLOS Ecosystems study led by @mdcatchen.bsky.social, we present computational algorithms to select surveillance sites that capture the most actionable data. Out now: dx.plos.org/10.1371/jour...
Fig 3. The case study for South Korea.

(A): Bivariate plot of dose (increasing green) and dose uncertainty (increasing blue). (B): Bivariate plot of dose (increasing green) and prevalence uncertainty (increasing orange; measured as the sum of estimated variance from kriging across each host-virus pair). (C): The spatial strata for which occurrence, prevalence, and both forms of sampling should occur (see main text for how these are computed). (D): The priority scores for regions where discovery sampling is a priority (increasingly blue) and prevalence sampling is the priority (increasingly purple) in their respective strata. (E): The total priority map with sites selected using Balanced Acceptance Sampling. The marker shape of each site corresponds to the type of sampling that should occur there, based on the stratum in (C) that each point falls within. Administrative boundaries come from GADM.

I keep debating if I’m willing to do another postdoc, but the reality is that when I left my paralegal role in 2018, I was making $69.5k base salary + OT + a $5k EoY bonus + a matched 401k, and the idea I would take a no benefits job paying $70k 8 years/two degree levels later is frankly ludicrous

The real American 🇺🇸 “brain drain” isn’t that a few established scholars might get new jobs outside the US, it’s the enormous number of grad students - particularly international grad students - who can’t or won’t study in the US now or in years to come. That’s the body blow.
