I recognize that this guy is making a joke, but it’s a telling one. “Parenting hits different when you work in AI” feels like a statement of what it’s doing to people’s brains to have a machine you can outsource your thinking to

More and more convinced that the reason AI is being pushed so hard is that it allows tech CEOs to do things that a person would be sent to jail for doing, but with the excuse that it was the robot that did it on its own

If you're willing to sell out trans kids for theoretical votes I have to assume you'd sell out anyone for theoretical votes, so, yes, I do think supporting sports bans means you get not a fucking thing from me.

Customer service has gotten materially worse. Web search is barely usable. Webpages have become less functional and those that still work are buckling under 100x the traffic. Basic computer functionality we've taken for granted has been trashed. Malpractice has proliferated across every industry.

It's almost as though there is no humane way to kill someone who doesn't want to die, no matter what we might like to tell ourselves for our own comfort.

(CW for graphic discussion of execution) This was a good, though obviously upsetting, read. Especially this part by Corinna Barrett Lain, about why states fight to keep using lethal injection despite multiple high profile failures slate.com/news-and-pol...
Why are they sticking with this? My conclusion is lethal injection just does one thing well, only one. It hides the violence of state killing. With lethal injection, you don't have the blood of the firing squad. You don't have the sickly smell of burning flesh like you do with the electric chair, or people gasping with the gas mask, or with the gas chamber. With lethal injection, we get to tell ourselves that these people are just falling into a forever sleep.
I was thinking of this saying that | had read, "The heart stops reluctantly." And I was like, Oh, right, the heart stops reluctantly. Before a person is ready to die on their own, it takes physical force to stop the heart from beating. It takes violence to stop the heart from beating. And it could be a car accident or a homicide or an execution, but it takes violence. And what's special about lethal injection is it hides the violence.

We need to rephrase the whole discussion in terms of hazardous products, instead of "minds". And then we need to make sure that there's liability. A model hacks someone? Put a C-suite guy in jail. A model produces sexual harassment material? Put a C-suite guy in jail. Watch how fast things get safe
