today's hardware designers could never conceive of what Kazuo Kawasaki was doing in 1996

I know this has been covered in various component aspects that I understand and have understood but I'm still having a very mild lightbulb moment that AI agents probably sound a lot more revolutionary if you've never done a task yourself without handing it off to your PA

1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066! 960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20

A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:

Stretch them

No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase

When I briefly met Harlan Ellison a million years ago, he was signing books in a university bookstore. I asked him what he was going to do that night. “Sit in my hotel room and stare at the wall,” he said.
"Wasting time" might be one of the strangest accusations we've ever invented. Apparently you can waste 2:00 p.m. by sitting under a tree doing nothing. The afternoon was going to pass either way. The Earth was going to rotate either way. But because you didn't convert those hours into money, errands or improvement, we decided the time itself was wasted. As if simply being alive isn't enough to justify an afternoon.

To my mind, it’s all about optimizing v. experiencing. The optimizers firmly believe that they can improve or even perfect life processes. Experiencers don’t see life this way. Culture pushes us towards optimization, but this is just not consistent with how we act or what makes us happy.

Oh, swallowed button batteries are life-threatening medical emergencies. See xrays of them routinely. I don’t think anybody said “Let’s invent a battery that somebody will want to swallow,” but “Let’s invent a battery that if a child swallows it they won’t be dead in 24 hours.”

now with alt-text
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

Walkers have done something to their crisps in the last few months that makes all their flavours taste weaker than they used to. I suspect they’ve reduced the salt level; all the flavourings rely on salt to give them some oomph. Might pop across town to their factory and protest outside.

Many replies say “Just tell them how you want it cut” which misses the (to me) obvious point that that’s the tricky bit if you don’t know the terminology. I know 1 is extremely short and higher numbers less so, but that’s the limit of my knowledge; and what if you don’t want just clipping all over?

🧵 A reminder #OTD that 'Hardrada' makes no sense in any language. The Norwegian king who died at Stamford Bridge in #1066 was called Haraldr harðráði in Old Norse. Such bynames or nicknames can (and should) usually be translated. His means something like 'Hard Ruler' or 'Stern Ruler'.
