Many people who were critical of MPD cost overruns were denounced as alarmist or anti-police. Now MPD has admitted to the abuse of overtime hours. I am grateful current leadership is cracking down but deeply frustrated by this betrayal of the public trust and the time it took to get answers.

Maybe the reason the economic vibes are so off isn't that things are *worse* than the great recession but because back then we all thought the pain was temporary, whereas the things that are wrong with the economy today have all been getting worse for a long time and show no signs of improving

I was doing a bike tour of Brugge, Belgium today and it started raining and all I had to do was ask to pause for a minute so I could grab my raincoat out of my backpack and put it on, as did my friend. Others grabbed their umbrellas. Then we just continued the ride. It's really that easy.

I appreciate EHB for taking his values to the dais tonight at the BET. I hope he and the other commissioners are able to wrangle some meaningful compromise from the mayor on oversight of police spending (which has outstripped their budget not only on overtime, but many other categories as well).

Jokes aside, the city and MPRB failed to come to agreement. I’ve been consistent in my perspective that city residents deserve a commitment from the Mayor and Council about how they will rein in MPD overspending, improve non-tax revenue, and protect bond ratings. So far, no tangible offers.

His points around needing public commitments on police oversight/reform are valid. Part of why the parks were facing cuts at all was because the city is facing police led cost overruns. Next week we need to fully fund parks (which the BET showed support for) and keep police accountable.

Deputy City Attorney Dan Abelson told the committee the city charter gives the council the authority to request information and the mayor must provide it, but the charter doesn’t specify what form that information must take. The council can’t compel city departments to give presentations, for example, he said.

The council president, Elliott Payne, said proponents of a strong-mayor system promised more accountability and efficiency, but limiting staffer time at the council won’t accomplish either.

“This is about government structure,” Payne said. “This is about the promise of the executive mayor form of government leading to more efficiency and more accountability and the failure of this to deliver on that.”

The mayor said one way or another, the council will get answers. But sometimes that will come in a written response.

“We are going to give them whatever information that they need, under the law,” Frey said.
