It's always funny when people talk about cars being "regulated" because we know that massive amounts of death and injury still occur and also, there is so much more we could do to regulate cars yet if you propose those things you're called a fascist

This comment from Reddit demonstrates why Edinburgh needs to tow vehicles rather than just ticket them. These are the vans blocking pedestrian crossings, cycle lanes, bus lanes, bus stops, disabled parking… Why do we allow such rampant rule breakers to negotiate a penalty? Tow them.

FFS, this is just capitulation to those loud and obnoxious car brained minority that oppose such measures through legal and illegal means. It's not like they are removing the parking to make it attractive car free place to be! Being a car sewer is what kills a place, not how much it costs to park.

A week before removing the filters, the council finally released the data we’ve all been waiting for. Pre modal filters, weekday average traffic volume on Braid Avenue was 3,800 vehicles and 8am-9am traffic was 450 vehicles. That’s roughly a car every 8 seconds as the kids go to school.

After lengthy repair, the 172m Porto’s Dom Luís I Bridge reopened to public transport, taxis, cyclists & pedestrians only. After lengthy repair, #Edinburgh’s 160m North Bridge reopened with a lane of hatching, no cycling provisions, without widening busy pavements and no traffic reduction measures.
Dom Luís I Bridge is a double-deck metal arch bridge that spans the river Douro between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal.

On 27 June 2003, the upper deck was closed to motor traffic in order to adapt the structure for the metro system. The new "D Line" was inaugurated on 18 September 2005, and opened to the metro trams and pedestrian traffic.

The lower deck remained open to general traffic until October 2021, when it closed temporarily to all traffic for the start of repairs and renovation work predicted to last about one year. When it reopened, in April 2023, the lower deck was restricted to public transport, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians.Photo shows North Bridge, four lanes for vehicles (x2 bus lanes, x2 vehicle area) and a fifth for hatching - space that could have been used for wider pavements.

North Bridge is a bridge in Edinburgh linking the High Street with Princes Street, and the Old Town with the New Town. The current bridge was built between 1894 and 1897.

The fact they put the dead space hatching and the pedestrian refuges back exactly as they were rather than widening the pavements and squeezing the lanes together at the bare minimum is absurd.

Anytime an ebike or an escooter user vaguely annoys someone, it's seen as grounds for banning them but this happens routinely & the answer is never to slow traffic or - god forbid! - encourage use of safer modes of transport instead; it's facilitating increased car use & encouraging higher speeds.

“My name is Dr Q Manivannan, I am a transgender Tamil immigrant, my pronouns are they/them” “This is what diversity looks like in power.” - @qmanivannan.bsky.social

A transgender candidate who secured one of three seats for the Scottish Green Party on the Edinburgh and Lothians East regional list said their victory in the election was “what diversity looks like”.

Dr Q Manivannan, the first person who identifies as transgender elected to Holyrood, and party colleagues Kate Nevens and Kayleigh Ferguson Kinross-O’Neill were among the seven candidates to secure seats on the list, along with Angela Ross from Reform UK, Irshad Ahmed and Katherine Sangster from the Scottish Labour Party and Scottish Conservative Miles Briggs.

“My name is Dr Q Manivannan, I am a transgender Tamil immigrant, my pronouns are they/them,” Dr Manivannan said as they addressed a crowd of cheering party supporters after the results were announced in Edinburgh.

“I am to some in this country everything that the hateful despise and I am standing here as your MSP now with care. They say politics is the art of the possible, a politics of care I would say expands what is possible for everyone left behind, pushed out or never invited in.”

They added: “This is what diversity looks like in power.”

Some responses more grounded in reality than others. And a consultation is not a referendum. Even a 50/50 split would be 1% of Edinburgh’s population against another 1%. What we need is political, future-focused will from our elected representatives. Climate change won’t solve itself. We need trams.
