Two panel comic of a speaker addressing an audience. The top panel has the speaker saying “Who wants to allow participants to be able to fully describe their ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity” with all audience members raising their hands. The bottom panel has the speaker saying “Who wants to clean this data so we can use it in our analyses”. The audience lowers their hands and heads, and a fly buzzing over their head to indicate silence.

Happy weekend! 🦛 ❤️ Two ancient Egyptian blue faience hippos made by artisans some 3,800 years ago! Neues Museum, Berlin 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows two blue-green Egyptian faience hippopotamus figurines displayed on a white museum surface at the Neues Museum in Berlin. The larger hippo on the right sits upright on its haunches with short front legs planted forward, head turned to the left with mouth open, as if smiling. It is 9 cm in length. The smaller hippo on the left lies in a reclining or resting pose, with body close to the ground. It measures 4.8cm in length. Both are decorated with black lotus flower and aquatic river plant motifs. The museum display makes them appear like a mother and her baby hippo! 🥰

Egyptian blue faience is a ceramic material made of ground quartz. The decoration depicts Nile river plants such as water weed and lotus flowers found in their marsh habitat. In ancient Egypt lotus flowers were associated with regeneration as they open in the morning and close at night, symbolising rebirth. Whilst ancient Egyptians were well aware of the danger and destructive power of hippos, they were also seen as an animal with revitalizing power. An animal from the fertile mud of the Nile, fiercely protective of their young, hippos embodied divine powers guaranteeing rebirth. Blue faience hippos have been found in Middle Kingdom tombs of high ranking officials. It's thought they were placed in the tombs to aid the rebirth of the deceased.

It's a systemic problem in science reporting that these summaries exaggerate the evidence. In the actual candy study, the participants were all students, status was manipulated in the lab by telling some students they were better than others, and "nearly twice" means 1 piece vs 2 pieces.
Piff and his colleagues found that upper-class drivers were more likely to cut other cars off at junctions and ignore pedestrians at crossings. Wealthier people also appeared more willing to lie at work. In one experiment, volunteers were left alone with a jar of sweets ostensibly meant for children. When the researchers returned, upper-class people had snaffled nearly twice as many candies as lower-class people.

I wrote briefly on the recent antibody image scandal for our weekly round up www.abundanceandgrowth.org/p/california...
Can antibody explain these images? — Saloni Dattani
Back in May, science sleuth Sholto David came across a suspicious image from the major life-sciences supplier Thermo Fisher. It was a Western blot showing the performance of one of their antibodies that is commonly used in cancer research. On the blot, four apparently separate protein bands were copies of the same shape, duplicated and flipped or rotated to produce the others.

Since then, Reese Richardson, a metascience and computational biology researcher and other sleuths uncovered many more by increasing image contrast and searching suppliers’ catalogues for repeated visual fingerprints, partly using image-search tools. According to Nature, they have now found over 18,000 questionable images across 15 commercial suppliers, with digital alterations such as repositioned bands, painted-over regions, and reused background noise. For the last category, Elisabeth Bik (who some say has forensic laser eyes) told Nature, “That particular type of image alteration or manipulation suggests that these antibodies were never tested at all in the lab.” Weirdly, identical images were sometimes used by multiple suppliers, which suggests that they came from the same third-party manufacturers.

The images don’t necessarily mean the antibodies themselves are flawed, but since other research has found that commercial antibodies are commonly unreliable, I wonder whether this is just the tip of the iceberg, and how much of scientists’ time has been wasted chasing false leads. One takeaway is that researchers should avoid relying on suppliers’ images and independently validate their antibodies. But given how time consuming and repetitive it would be for individual scientists to validate them, a wider effort seems worthwhile. For example, the Canadian open-science company YCharOS tests some commercial antibodies head-to-head and publishes their results openly, and the University of Leicester’s ‘Only Good Antibodies’ hosts this data on a searchable database, though neither are comprehensive. The sleuths themselves also host a Zenodo repository with their findings.

1/43 Ok folks, after much teasing and anticipation, I'm THRILLED to share our new paper in Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. Not gonna lie: I'm proud of this one, and I hope it makes an impact on the field (so please share!). A thread 🧵👇
To Be a Mental Disorder: Revisiting Behavioral Addictions
Joshua B. Grubbs, * Nicholas C. Borgogna, Beáta Bőthe, Hyoun S. Kim, Rory A. Pfund, Shane W. Kraus

Manuscript to appear in the 2027 edition of Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, this preprint may not
exactly represent the final printed copy.

Grubbs, J.B., Borgogna, N.C., Bőthe, Beáta, Kim, H.S., Pfund, R.A., & Kraus, S.W. (2027) To Be a Mental Disorder: Revisiting Behavioral Addictions. Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. 10.1146/annurev-clinpsy-061225-045608

Behavioral addictions have been recognized in various forms for centuries, yet only three—Gambling Disorder, Gaming Disorder, and Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder—are currently included in formal diagnostic systems. In the past decade, research on these conditions has expanded dramatically in both volume and methodological rigor, drawing on longitudinal, neurobiological, and cross-cultural designs and evolving into a truly global science. Even so, the field remains beset by unresolved controversies. Chief among these is a persistent tendency to import substance use disorder concepts—tolerance, withdrawal, and dependence—that lack conceptual and empirical support when applied to behavior. Related challenges concern the over-pathologizing of normal engagement and a reliance on confirmatory, self-report measurement of uncertain validity. We argue that advancing the field requires sustained funding, theory grounded in the disorders themselves, objective and intensive-longitudinal methods, greater diversity, and public health and regulatory attention to increasingly technological environments.
