“Whether idionomically guided treatment does better is itself a causal question about groups, answerable by randomizing patients to idionomically guided or standard treatment.” Well put. (Keep reading “idiotically” though)

Hayes has been banging this drum about idionomic analyses for 6+ years, with folk like @jamiecummins.bsky.social pointing out that its reinventing-the-wheel-but-worse for just as long. My experience is that the ACT community is insufficiently interested and aware of existing methods+stats work.

We just published a meta-analysis, where one finding is that "number of sickdays" is a bounded, not seldom zero/one-inflated variable, which is unsuitable for meta-analysis based on mean/SD. Today, I came across a meta-analysis including sickday stats like mean=9 and SD=27. doi.org/10.1186/s403...

It only recently became apparent to me that some psychologists publish "method development" in applied journals, which means reviewers are not properly equipped. Looking at the where this group has published on this topic before makes the pattern clear in this case at least. Why did CPR invite this?

I see this comment a lot: I shouldn't use Bayesian models without a good reason. Frequentist packages (maximum likelihood, etc) are a special case of Bayesian analysis. Bayes can do *any* MLE model plus a lot more. So the question is, what is your justification for restricting yourself to MLE?

At a basic level, I think this depends on what you care about. If you want quick pubs for a grade or a promotion, just do t-tests. If you are interested in your data, learn how to fit and interpret ordinal models.

Curiously, I again encountered a CFA paper that refers to Marsh et al 2004 to justify rule-of-thumb cutoffs to interpret model fit. Marsh's title is "Comment on hypothesis-testing approaches to setting cutoff values for fit indexes and dangers in overgeneralizing Hu and Bentler’s (1999) findings"

If you would have also said yes, then there is something missing in your understanding of causal inference. RCTs *do not* provide information about what would have happened to a person if they had received the treatment. They provide information about average *group-level* differences.

{easystats} is not only highly functional and powerful, but their help is also a goldmine of accessible #statistics advice. Here explaining how to address high VIF values (hint: generally not by removing predictors, as often done) easystats.github.io/performance/... Thanks @easystats.github.io
High VIF values indicate that coefficient estimates may be unstable and have inflated standard errors. However, removing predictors with high VIF values is generally not recommended as a blanket solution (Vanhove 2021; Morrissey and Ruxton 2018; Gregorich et al. 2021). Multicollinearity is primarily a concern for interpretation of individual coefficients, not for the model’s overall predictive performance or for drawing inferences about the combined effects of correlated predictors.

Consider these points when dealing with multicollinearity:

If your goal is prediction, multicollinearity is typically not a problem. The model can still make accurate predictions even when predictors are highly correlated (Feng et al. 2019; Graham 2003).

If your goal is to interpret individual coefficients, high VIF values signal that you should be cautious. The coefficients represent the effect of each predictor while holding all others constant, which may not be meaningful when predictors are strongly related. In such cases, consider:
Interpreting coefficients jointly rather than individually
Acknowledging the uncertainty in individual coefficient estimates
Considering whether your research question truly requires separating the effects of correlated predictors

For interaction terms, high VIF values are expected and often unavoidable. This is sometimes called “inessential ill-conditioning” (Francoeur 2013). Centering the component variables can sometimes help reduce VIF values for interactions (Kim and Jung 2024).

Consider the substantive context: Sometimes, multicollinearity reflects important aspects of your data or research question. Removing variables to reduce VIF may actually harm your analysis by omitting important confounders or by changing the interpretation of remaining coefficients (Gregorich et al. 2021).

The methods section is the most important section of a paper. Without knowing the methods, the results are literally meaningless. So it's not OK to relegate the methods to the end. Because this suggests they are an optional afterthought rather than the essential core of the entire paper.

#StatsPubs No matter how many times you read it, this paper on hierarchical GAMs keeps giving. Clear model explanations together with R code (mgcv). So useful! doi.org/10.7717/peer... Thanks for writing @ericjpedersen.bsky.social, D. Miller, @gsimpson.bsky.social @noamross.net
In this paper, we discuss an extension to two popular approaches to modeling complex structures in ecological data: the generalized additive model (GAM) and the hierarchical model (HGLM). The hierarchical GAM (HGAM), allows modeling of nonlinear functional relationships between covariates and outcomes where the shape of the function itself varies between different grouping levels. We describe the theoretical connection between HGAMs, HGLMs, and GAMs, explain how to model different assumptions about the degree of intergroup variability in functional response, and show how HGAMs can be readily fitted using existing GAM software, the mgcv package in R. We also discuss computational and statistical issues with fitting these models, and demonstrate how to fit HGAMs on example data. All code and data used to generate this paper are available at: github.com/eric-pedersen/mixed-effect-gams.
