I do like a good revolution, but here the thoughtful application of established methods seems a more fruitful approach.

"Replication crisis" reforms like preregistration & pre-analysis plans were developed to control false positives in experimental research. Does that work in observational studies? Our new paper in Sociological Methods & Research argues for a different approach. 🧵 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
A Replication Framework for Observational Research: From Specification Restriction to Specification Expansion
Jonathan Ben-Menachem https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8092-0848 jbenmenachem@gmail.com, Ari Galper https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7909-8837, and Nic Fishman
Abstract
Sociology has remained relatively insulated from debates about the “replication crisis.” Heeding calls to consider replication more deeply, we introduce a distinction between two types of research reforms that have emerged in the wake of the crisis: specification-restricting and specification-expanding reforms. Specification restriction is often promoted as a way to increase the repeatability of research findings by controlling false positives. We argue that this statistical justification is less compelling in observational contexts—where the assumptions licensing false-positive control are harder to sustain and rigid ex ante analytical commitments can instead enshrine fragile specifications—than in experimental contexts. We further argue that apparently low replication rates do not necessarily imply a high prevalence of false positive findings. Instead, we propose a replication framework centered on specification-expanding reforms, stronger incentives for confirmatory research, and meta-analysis. This approach equips sociologists to assess the repeatability of findings and build a more cumulative discipline.

If there's something positive in the ai/science discourse it has made more ppl reflect on why humanity keeps doing science beyond instrumental accounts-- for some, not only is the pursuit of knowledge inherently valuable but also defines collective curiosity & shapes our other values

My ordered beta regression paper has now reached over 5k downloads on OSF: osf.io/preprints/so... I'd like to thank all of the readers 🫶 and also academic publishing companies by making it so darn hard to access the published version. As an FYI, the OSF version is *exactly* the same.

New on the PsyArXiv blog: "Preprints: Where They Fit in Today’s Public Access Policy Landscape" blog.psyarxiv.com/2026/08/13/p...
Quote from linker article:

Benefits of preprint publishing for researchers

Speed: Preprint publishing is fast, especially when compared with traditional journals.
Citable outputs: Preprint platforms, such as PsyArXiv, assign persistent identifiers like DOIs, making preprints fully citable.
Early credit: Preprints help researchers, especially those early in their career, demonstrate productivity and establish precedence.
Improving access: Posting a preprint increases accessibility by making an open access version of the work available.
Foundation for peer review: Preprints provide an opportunity for early feedback and can be peer-reviewed through platforms such as Review Commons and PREreview.
Documentation and verification: Versioning, timestamps, and persistent identifiers provide a transparent record of the publication.

Finally out in Psychological Review (psycnet.apa.org/doi/10.1037/...), our update to Signal Detection Theory. We show that contrary to the prevailing Gaussian assumption, evidence distributions in recognition memory are likely minimum extreme Gumbel!
Figure 7: Illustration of the Gumbel-min Signal Detection Model
Figure consists of three panels.
Bottom-left panel: The Gumbel-min latent-strength distributions associated with SIGNAL (old) and NOISE (new) items. Top-left panel: The log likelihood ratio (log-LR) for the two latent-strength distributions. Right panel: The receiver operating characteristic function produced by the two latent-strength distributions. pH = hit probabilities; pFA = false-alarm probabilities.
