I’d like to understand the politics of this. If it was straightforward gerontocracy, wouldn’t the Tories’ older demographic think ‘well we’ve already got our nest eggs’? Or is this about vibes that just feel anti-old, even if they’re anti-future old people?

Since we’re doing another round of “AI will destroy humanity” doom-hype, it’s a good time to announce a new paper myself and my postdoc advisor just had accepted by BioSocieties on just this. TL;DR: almost all the “AI can make bioweapons” literature comes ultimately from the Effective Altruists.

AI technologies, and their palpable risks, have changed so much in the last decade. But the story has remained the same. The idea of an "intelligence explosion" goes back to the 60s, as they acknowledge in their first citation here.
