Interesting piece on personality in the Washington Post, they talked to @tedmond.bsky.social and @tuckerdrob.bsky.social about changing personality, birth order, genetics effects… (but no @dingdingpeng.the100.ci cameo on birthorder!)

Column | Birth order doesn’t predict your personality. Here’s what does.
New research is challenging assumptions about what determines our personality — and showing that you can change it.

We had an item on the kids news (we have kids news in NL) about book bans in US schools and I had to stop my oldest daughter (9) from hitting the TV with a stick… ❤️💕❤️ (I love that they have my aggression but chaneled towards justice and I can help bend it to art)

Really cool within-family polygenic analysis of the (potentially causal) relationship between Personality and Economic Outcomes like income and wealth. Great use of negative controls to confirm the within family PGI doesnt relate to parental confounders.

People who have worked with academic micro economists know this is a very warped view… If we leave aside the methods experts in each field, I’d rate a median micro economist as stronger than median in other social sciences, epi and bio sciences esp when it comes to rigor in inference.

Obviously bleak as fuck, and also incredibly hackable using AI… This will just set of the most cynical arms race ever where applicants mirror the AI judging and optimize against it, with AI…

All I need from publishing, beyond preprint, could be re-packaged as niche podcasts and youtube channels and streamers... Quite frankly all we need are capable ppl with taste and skills to 1. read the work and 2. discuss/test its merrits freely and openly. I can then opt into the views I trust.

Kinda bizarre that in this day and age Spotify doesn’t have a feature yet where I can describe the mood and occasion in natural language, and combined with data on my likes and listening it generates a playlist for me… should be very solvable???

This is quite useful for genetics, but dependent on whether any of the inputs are genetics specific, might also be useful for psychologists and social scientists. Go from nagelkerke’s R2 to the R2 on the liability scale ( a latent variable that underlies your binary outcome)

When we talk about how science is broken, maybe at least consider how a huge collaboration measured the ripples in spacetime resulting the collision of two black holes 1.3 billion light years away, as counterweight the guy who had to fake his data to show that people who procrastinate fall behind.

I never entertained the “when a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound” thought experiment because it always felt so incredibly detached of anything practical. But it’s an exact facsimile for AI generating lean proofs for open math problems no one reads/understands…

It’s quite surreal how disconnected the AI discourse on the fans and critics sides is now… Very little sort of moderate appetite to do things like regulate mandatory water circulation, and green on/near site power generation for servers.
