Behavioral addictions have been recognized in various forms for centuries, yet only three—Gambling Disorder, Gaming Disorder, and Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder—are currently included in formal diagnostic systems. In the past decade, research on these conditions has expanded dramatically in both volume and methodological rigor, drawing on longitudinal, neurobiological, and cross-cultural designs and evolving into a truly global science. Even so, the field remains beset by unresolved controversies. Chief among these is a persistent tendency to import substance use disorder concepts—tolerance, withdrawal, and dependence—that lack conceptual and empirical support when applied to behavior. Related challenges concern the over-pathologizing of normal engagement and a reliance on confirmatory, self-report measurement of uncertain validity. We argue that advancing the field requires sustained funding, theory grounded in the disorders themselves, objective and intensive-longitudinal methods, greater diversity, and public health and regulatory attention to increasingly technological environments.

I've made an R package for Bayesian Rasch #psychometrics with brms models, easyRaschBayes (on CRAN), implementing simple functions to create figures and tables with model fit metrics, etc. Attaching figures from conditional item infit, item-restscore with GK gamma, and the log-likelihood criterion.

Love methods papers where the authors cover an estimator’s properties in painstaking detail, then add a footnote: “We assume X, Y, Z, which are unrealistic, but relaxing them is too complex” Thanks. I suppose it’s up to us applied researchers to deal with those gaps then?

Yes, archive OCI (Open Container Initiative) images for each project. Then we can simply docker / podman pull & run, without installing and fixing broken system or R package deps. This is much more future-proof and convenient than any R-only solution

Wasn't that happy with how performance crashed as time points grew, so I dusted off some linear algebra to optimize the calculations. Benchmark showed a ~1Mx speedup using new implementation (with 100 time points) 😅

I see this a lot in longitudinal analysis—people assume missingness can depend on random effects (like slopes). But those aren’t conditioned on, so that kind of missingness would be non-ignorable (MNAR).

This new package for mediation is great! The user interface is *so intuitive* but the unsung hero of this software is the documentation:

M: a mediator, that is mostly driven by U, not X

Nothing, because you shouldn't do mediation analysis.

Despite the well-polished workflow of this package, I tried to analyze the “useless data set” that comes with it using {mediation}. Treatment and mediator were (strongly) confounded, so we need to pay close attention to the sensitivity analysis!

Been reading up on causal prediction – let me know if I’ve got this right: Clinical prediction: Hard. Causal inference: Hard. Causal prediction: Combines the hardest parts of both. Predict outcomes we can’t observe, and evaluate models by making even more assumptions about an unobservable target.

You aren't allowed to say “risk factor”

People often say their goal is to identify “risk factors”. But what does that mean? Some people use the term to indicate potential causes of outcomes. Then just say cause. Others use it to identify predictors of outcomes. Then just say predict. And, sadly, too many others use it as shorthand for factors that are “statistically associated” with outcomes. In this case, say nothing at all, since this “goal” has no clinical utility whatsoever (beyond what it might suggest about causation or prediction). So once you have framed your research question as description, prediction, causation or measurement, there is no longer a need to talk about risk factors. It's basically just a catch-all phrase to cover up muddy thinking.
