I am saying this as a very uninformed outsider, but it seems bad that Lula is running for a 4th term AT AGE 80. I'm not a huge believer in term-limits as a cure-all, but Mexico limiting presidents to a single 6-yr term forced AMLO and the party to cultivate a successor. That's what a movement needs.

You know what, this one is on me. What am I doing here?
Google search results from "how to organize middle class homeowners" and all the results are about decluttering your home.

What kind of scandal will it take to lead to the widespread elimination of Greek fraternities? Hazing so severe it results in serious maiming or death? It's happened. Absolutely hideous sexual assaults? It's happened. Terroristic actions in pursuit of campus political power? It's happened!

Anyone who, in 2026, is already saying “I don’t want to vote for Newsom but I will” is part of the problem. This man is a fucking monster and has betrayed everyone imaginable. He is unacceptable in every possible way. There is no world in which this piece of shit should be trusted with power.

There's some throughline here from the economic right's blind faith in rational economic actors to faith in rational gamblers. There will be some kind of national reckoning with legal gambling in the next decade. It can't continue like this.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm too tuned into Bsky discourse, and a lot of prominent voices happen to be trans. Then I remember my nephew is trans, my cousin is NB, a friend is NB, plus gay and lesbian friends and family, and frankly the pro-trans voices here keep me grounded and make me a better ally.

We need to agree on how to malign people who are stupid and ignorant. We can agree that humans have inherent dignity regardless of their intelligence or ability and also NOT extend grace to politicians, journalists, and others in the public square saying awful things because they're dumb and bad.

People are on here talking wild reckless to trans people. And it is very annoying because trans people have done everything they needed to do. They educated the public about candidates who were against civil rights. They pointed people towards viable alternatives. They came through in primaries.

I have a friend in IT who was excited about LLMs two years ago, and was/is using them, as directed, for FAQs, process flows, etc. Now she's extremely negative on them. Upshot is everyone above her is comfortable with customers and users getting wrong answers and disinfo ABOUT THEIR OWN PRODUCTS.

Time for my controversial Starship Troopers take. Verhoven fucked up most of the action scenes with his transition to CGI. They were not supposed to be boring and repetitive as an additional layer of commentary on fascism. It damages the rewatchability of an otherwise brilliant movie.

Anybody who’s still advocating putting these tools anywhere near a school is not doing so despite the cognitive collapse they cause, but because of it. dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...
Abstract
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative Al affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine monthly closed-book exams, high-school and college entrance exams, and homework scores and completion time across nine subjects. We exploit staggered Al adoption in a difference-in-differences design. Al adoption raises homework scores by 18% and reduces completion time by 30%, but lowers monthly exam scores by 20% within six months.
High-stakes entrance-exam scores fall by 18 and 24%, with the full penalty emerging only after about two years. The losses are largest in social science subjects, followed by STEM and languages, and are especially large for junior students, high-achieving students, and boys. The learning losses are concentrated among roughly 80% of Al users whose behavior is consistent with homework outsourcing, as indicated by exceptionally short homework completion time coupled with high homework scores. Al users who maintain similar homework completion time as non-Al users experience small learning losses.

@abdulelsayed.bsky.social triumphing over something like $60 million, $32-ish million of it AIPAC money, is not a "narrow" victory, it's a people's earthquake. This kind of spending is oligarchy in action, to smother democracy through its formal channels, and is getting normalized. Still he won.

My wife used to babysit kids as a teenager in the 80s for $1/hour per kid. That'd be $3-4/hour in todays dollars. The minimum wage when my wife babysat was 3.35/hour and in my state it's $15/hour. We never found a teen sitter for my son that asked for less than minimum wage, often more.
