My coach circa 1997 used to reminisce how the high school had a smoking lounge when it first opened, from 1975-1980, that was for both teachers and students.

Before Trump's second term there is no American political figure responsible for more civilian deaths than Dick Cheney. Liz Cheney defended torture when she was at State and every other decision his admin made. Trump was offensive to them because he's piloting the machine they built.

Kristol has earned benefit of the doubt status, but Trump is the embodiment of the unitary executive Cheney worked to create from the time he was in the Ford administration. We're living in the hell he created. His daughter criticized Trump 1 for NOT starting war with Iran. She is terrible too.

Fuck @atrupar.com for just re-posting Trump's violent engagement bait as his own engagement bait.

Hey Aaron, fuck you for posting this to my feed. You're doing the same thing the president is by disseminating this. This isn't the same thing as posting a clip from a rally.

I don't think they can even pretend that anymore. A depressing electoral side-effect here is their supporters exploiting immigrants (farm owners and small businesses) know ICE enforcement has been terrible and cruel. The only people left are those that want to see real cruelty, not fear-monger.

Skipping the Democratic primary in 2024 was disastrous. As much as I was in it for Bernie in 20 (and have some bitterness), it was clear that Biden consolidating a competitive field made him stronger in the general. Clinton essentially created Bernie by pre-emptively clearing the field in 16.

Metra Eccentric @metraeccentric.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
My hot take is this is good and fine in a relatively open Democratic primary a la 2004 or 2008. She almost certainly won't win, but if she actually does it'll be because she'll have won over a lot of voters and defeated a competitive field. That process engages D voters and that's 75% of the work.

Great write-up. Damning in all the small details even if they basically say this stuff publicly. I laughed. "If Rizzo’s aim was to provoke empathy by inducing in us the sort of frazzled mindstate that might cause a traumatized police officer to spiral into full insanity, he succeeded admirably."

I unsubscribed to them when they defended Platner with his nazi tattoo so this feels like a reaffirmation that it was the correct choice. Very much The Atlantic of the left. Do they publish good authors and articles sometimes? Yes. Does the editorial staff know shit about shit? No.

I'm hardly a horror buff, but the Captain Clark has to be one of the least scary monsters I've seen. All the pop-psych bullshit really did not cohere or connect to anything. Like, just make an obvious, ham-fisted allegory, but the divorced guy and therapist stuff had 0 thematic resonance.

My 13yo son begged me to watch Backrooms which was a good choice on his part since he does not handle horror well and it was an incredibly tame R horror movie. Entertaining enough, but did not really impress me aside from knowing it was a low-budget directorial debut.

Point being is I think long-term success at it requires as much practical experience at the grocery store and the slog of meal planning and prep than it does some kind of pure moral vision. I was lucky that I went veg while poor in college with other veg roommates.

I'm not vegan, but I'm well aware of the cruelty and exploitation with eggs and dairy. We all set the standard somewhere and it can change over time. But I do eat (and cook) vegan constantly just because there's so much great food that doesn't use eggs and dairy.

I've been vegetarian for 20+ years and I always tell people that it's a pro-rated activity - if you can't commit to 100% there's still a huge benefit to being intentional about it a few days a week or even a few meals.

I assume he means for 2004 Senate after Jack Ryan dropped out and needed to be replaced. I'm sure Ditka would have outperformed Alan Keyes (and his name did get thrown around), but there's no way he would have won. But.. what if he forced Obama to campaign more and not speak at the 2004 DNC?

I also just rewatched S1E1 with the same intention and was blown away how all the elements were already in place - his desperate persona for friends and taking someone through a roleplay rehearsal (for the tiny pizzas). He's still more daily show correspondent than auteur documentarian, but still.

Exactly this. It was twisting the idea of Russian social media influence (which existed) into Trump somehow having stolen the election. But the real concern was the most bribable man of all time not giving up his business interests.

It's at a point where I feel like hoarding the hardware and fully controlling the market is actually one of the main points the hype is covering for. Yes, it's a construction bubble, yes it's a financial investment bubble, yes it's a hardware bubble, etc.

Yeah, the Edward Ghost Olmos reveal was awful, fully telegraphed in his first appearance and the whole season was boring as hell.

Yeah, I think there's a good chance that 1) Talarico wins AND 2) Abbott wins AND 3) Talarico ends up being a super moderate pro-oil guy and disappointing a lot of out of state fans (but not a turncoat like Sinema or Fetterman).

While his crimes all happened before he was Speaker he was also in charge when another Republican was using the Congressional page program as a sex abuse ring. But if MoC had to follow rules and laws or do anything other than fundraise 40 hours/week it would damage the institution as we know it.

I've been re-listening to history podcasts around the New Deal and Truman falling into the presidency, and it makes you wonder what if Roosevelt had not run for a 4th and backed Henry Wallace to the hilt. Or fought harder for him to stay on as VP.

I am saying this as a very uninformed outsider, but it seems bad that Lula is running for a 4th term AT AGE 80. I'm not a huge believer in term-limits as a cure-all, but Mexico limiting presidents to a single 6-yr term forced AMLO and the party to cultivate a successor. That's what a movement needs.

You're gaining an audience of people seeking out a show to pass the time, not pushing an existing audio-only audience into watching it (although I'm sure that happens naturally for some percent).

Talk shows have been a thing since forever. It's not filming a radio show, it's producing a low-budget talk show at the same time you're producing a podcast. Some people are looking for a show to watch and it fills that niche even if they also would listen to it as a podcast.

It's unbelievably stupid because LIDAR is a very well understood technology, and it makes no sense that Musk hates it even within his hateful and small worldview. It really is just rank stupidity and the fact that he can overrule engineers on something so basic means the stock is worthless.

"Today's culture pushes us to make sure the burrito is cooked evenly, flipping and rotating per instructions. But many of us grew up (and preferred!) eating it still a little frozen. If the Democrats want to reach voters, it won't be through hot new programs, but learning to enjoy the cold center."

I've literally been organizing public and political campaigns for over 20 years, but sometimes you just want an easy answer from computer. The praxis and dialectic of meeting and talking to all your neighbors is sometimes exhausting.

Google search results from "how to organize middle class homeowners" and all the results are about decluttering your home.

The book is a soft argument for prison abolition, but not police abolition. But it just made it so clear that when the police actually do their job *as intended* their only responsibility is to fill those prisons and nothing else.

At the time of the murder, for several hours on either side, he was at a community cookout with hundreds of witnesses. Local police railroaded him anyway because they needed a perp (young white woman was killed). Prosecution went along every step of the way.

Just Mercy (book) is what finally made me 100% abolish/defund police. The main story is an innocent man on death row. But it's nothing like true crime where the attorney (author) is poking holes in state evidence or finding new evidence. EVERYONE, the police and DA, KNEW he was innocent.

What kind of scandal will it take to lead to the widespread elimination of Greek fraternities? Hazing so severe it results in serious maiming or death? It's happened. Absolutely hideous sexual assaults? It's happened. Terroristic actions in pursuit of campus political power? It's happened!
