Good old Coomassie Brilliant Blue G250 can be used as a fluorescent gel stain. And done right, it performs as well as Sypro Ruby, if you have access to an infrared scanner like the LiCor Odyssey.

I had this discussion this morning with my next-door colleague , after mentioning the “GAPDH” promoter nomenclature issue to him. Many of their tetrahymena experiments are done in starvation conditions, for convenience. A bunch of the genes in the pathway they study just turn off unexpectedly

A reminder to budding yeast researchers: if you use the "GAPDH" promoter to drive constitutive expression, please be careful about how you describe this. The gene GPD1 encodes glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, not Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. The TDH3 promoter is probably what you use

One of my favorite parts of this paper full of beautiful experiments is the finding that phosphorylation of a regulatory helix switches the direction of transport. I asked Google's chatbot, Gemini, to help me install & run an RNA structure/sequence analysis program on my Mac. It asked me to paste the sequence for analysis, and it would make the input file. Output looked a little funny… it had deleted one of the 29 nt from the middle of the pasted sequence!

Few statisticians know that Frank Yates, pioneer of experimental design, is responsible for the annoying practice of indicating 3 tiers of statistical significance by stars (*p ≤ 0.05, **p ≤0.01, ***p ≤ 0.001). He soon regretted it and “vehemently opposed its unthinking use”. And here we are.
