Now online! In-cell discovery and characterization of a non-canonical bacterial protein translocation-folding complex

In-cell discovery and characterization of a non-canonical bacterial protein translocation-folding complex
In-cell cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) combined with proteomics, integrative structural modeling, and bioinformatics enables discovery and functional annotation of uncharacterized proteins. In the minimal bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae, this reveals a complex that links Sec-based protein translocation and extracellular folding, capable of supporting both co- and post-translational pathways.

EMBL scientists uncovered new interactions between molecular machines directly inside cells. With cryo-ET, they gleaned new aspects of bacterial protein production, transport, and folding in cells – and a new way to analyse ‘communities’ of molecular machines. www.embl.org/news/science...

🎉 Out today in Cell: the paper I've been looking forward to sharing for a long time 🎉 We used cryo-ET to find a molecular machine nobody knew existed on the surface of a minimal bacterium, and worked out what it does. 🧵(1/7) #TeamTomo #cryoET

Great new study from Veijo! Using cryoET, cell biology and molecular dynamics simulations to show how seipin switches from a closed to an open conformation that defines the ER–lipid droplet connection and drives lipid droplet growth.

How does a cell remodel the ER membrane into a lipid droplet? Excited to share our new bioRxiv preprint, where we find that regulated opening of the seipin ring defines a functional ER–lipid droplet interface — and identify SMLR1 as a regulator of this transition. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Excited to share that as my group launches across Karolinska Institutet and the University of Helsinki, we’re recruiting postdocs and research assistants to study the nanoscale architecture of lipid flux using in-cell structural biology approaches, including cryo-ET and cryo-CLEM

Tired of knowing what you are looking for in your tomograms? Why not try bluesky-less Frosina's new self-supervised algorithm for semantic segmentation and particle picking for #teamtomo (includes a new denoiser without the need for odd/even tomos) Code is on GitHub if you want to try it out
