Ever wondered what makes some alleles dominant (A) and others recessive (a) ? In our new paper, we explored how a series of recently discovered "dominance modifiers", genetic elements that have long remained elusive, achieve their regulatory function. journals.plos.org/plosgenetics...

Dominance modifiers at the Arabidopsis self-incompatibility locus retain proto-miRNA features and act through non-canonical pathways
Author summary Many plants avoid self-fertilization through a system of self-incompatibility, which allows them to recognize and reject their own pollen. In plants like those in the Arabidopsis family...

For #WorldTapirDay my #linocut Malayan tapirs, adult and baby. 🧪🐡 There are four types of tapir; this linocut is of both an adult and baby Malayan tapir. Tapirs always look very dapper, if improbable, in their black and white coat. The adults with their white saddles look like an aardvark crossed
This linocut is of both an adult and baby Malayan tapir. The adult is facing right and is on the top of the print. It’s a heavy quadruped with a trunk. It’s black with white saddle pattern. Below is the juvenile tapir facing left. It is smaller with rounder ears and shorter trunk. It is black with a pattern of spots in stripes like a faun. This lino block print is printed on Japanese kozo, or mulberry paper 23.5 cm by 31.7 cm (9.25 inches by 12.5 inches).

🧬Sex chromosomes don’t always evolve predictably. Preliminary data suggested the Y chromosome of the swamp guppy Poecilia picta🐠 differed markedly from the common guppy (P. reticulata), hinting at degeneration in the former, even though both species share a recent sex determination system. 🧵2/6
Figure of the phylogeny of the Poecilia species studied as well as three outgroup species. The main highlight is how Poecilia picta and Poecilia reticulata share a recent, common sex chromosome pair, but there were hints prior to that study that the Y chromosome was degenerated only in the former.

🚨 My very first postdoc paper is out! 🐠 We show that the Y chromosome of the swamp guppy (Poecilia picta) has rapidly degenerated, losing genes, shrinking, and filling up with transposable elements, while the X responds by exporting key male genes to autosomes. 🧵⬇️ 1/6 📷Joëlle Lafond

It includes artistic drawing of the male fish of this study, Poecilia picta, on a background with DNA helixes.
