HOW I FAILED

I tried to fit the body of light into the body of darkness.
I tried to lengthen the last landscape.
I tried to unhinge and reconstruct
the language I had been given.
I tried to fit the body of darkness into the body of light.

in the sanity of your friends. Lucille Clifton
for the mad

you will be alone at last
in the sanity of your friends.

brilliance will fade away from you
and you will settle in dimmed light.

you will not remember how to mourn
your dying difference.

you will not be better but
they will say you are well.

Sylva Fischerová, translated by the author with Stuart Friebert
NEAR THE BOTTOM

But behind the end, near the bottom,
a longing to be like everyone else:
walking around your own house
as if around the mist,
planting a tree,
and misunderstanding the prophets.
I also wanted
to eat oysters with lemon
somewhere in Montmartre,
I also wanted calm and money,
and the bright colors of stones underwater.
Those bright colors underwater!

this i think is the poem I’m most known for, and probably will be for the rest of my life
How to Live

Depravity begins with thinking of love

as a radical act. I quit loving

with difficulty. I love

easy now. Two parakeets on my shoulders.

They'll fly away if I move. So I move.

I love flight. I love cages

left wide open. I am not a window.

I could be a window. Open me,

you'll find a dense wood,

children wandering inside it.

Not lost children. They know the way.

They live the way horses run.

If they each had a bird in hand

they would open their hands.

And the kink in the line and the kink in general is attention. Han VanderHart (Poetry Northwest)
HANNAH VANDERHART

My Love Snakes the Shower Drain to Keep My Feet from Standing Water

And the kink in the line and the kink
in general is attention.

There is nothing in the plumber's kit
which is not a vector for love.

Vector: the flea from the rat
to the human, I explain to the child.

Who has time to explain a plague,
the black death, London?

Love is the flea, in a certain light.

Hawking my bloody book again, before heading out to reattach various bits to my car, which hasn’t enjoyed the modifications made to my track by the storms. ‘Counter Offensive’
Counter-Offensive

I found you, shattered in a corner of the internet, a splintered glade of leafless, spattered stumps. Some skipping blade had drained all colour from your boyish face, there butchered, flinching, from the distant crumps of rockets landing in some other place, beyond the hill.

Please, kill me, you had screamed, I'm fucked! Your trembling friend had steadied, then tight-tucked the windlass of the tourniquet, I closed my phone, your agony just swiped away. Till later when I might again have time, to bear my pointless witness, make a wording of this old familiar crime.

I didn't see the coloured tapes, that might identify which side, or might add some prim purpose to this troubling rhyme and didn't care. Just entry wounds, still smoking in the warm spring air, the gargling screams. I clenched my jaw, went back to sleep, back to my dreams, the horror with a clicked subside. I mildly thought about you, when I woke. You hovered at the edge of every word I spoke.

Don't edit violin and piano sonatas by Bach on a rainy day, Debussy warned, or you will feel the rain inside you. "He is unbearable except when he is admirable," Debussy said of Bach's fastidious "joyless measures… with ever the same little rascal of a subject countersubject."

A new poem posted today for Top Tweet Tuesday, a platform for imagist poetry hosted by @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social over on X. 'In Polzeath, I’d split my body for him' Thought I'd share it here too. Thank you for reading 🙏🤍 #poetrycommunity #writingcommunity #poetry #imagist

In Polzeath, I’d split my body for him

where frescoes of Skyrim
feign fortune & frieze—

invite frost-feathers of misflight.
Waiting for faith to blow warm,

the way the will is annexed
to heather & shore-sworn inheritance.

Outlands sculpt a skull.
What solemns its sockets?

Unbirded coves the Atlantic
tongues deep for violet relief.

Eves steep with salt & old language.
A woman unearthing her urn

to hold a whole tidal legacy.
To love his ruinscape, to be hooked

at such angle of pleasure—
his bright aspect a debt worth owing.

For poets & artists, Bluesky right now feels like a family reunion, but a mythical one you *actually want to go to* & by this I even mean us introverts, a double miracle.
A view of very blue, calm sea shallows, and hints of blue sky, through a straggly pōhutukawa branch horizontalling the top half of the picture. Pale rocks jut from the water in a herd, like a family of volcanic tortoises. The creamy sand of the sea floor is visible at the edge around the rocks, submerged in utterly clear water, undisturbed by light ripples.

'enough shoulder, enough hip, to carry a whole fucking life' (thx always to Beavermag for giving this love poem with teeth its forever home)
ANKH SPICE

The pact

We've joked about it since the day we met;
the long hock of you like an uncured ham,
my runner's shanks-osso bucco. Tender oysters of ilium, where a husband dimples at the spine; the well-marbled bacon of your oestrogen skirt. Whoever goes first, we say
reserves the right of recipe. Before we met, the world was hollow
and I turned in its belly, reducing. You were a hard streak of boiling for the blood to turn and paint you soft as other girls, lugging their plucks from birth. What isn't about the body and its demands-jut
enough shoulder, enough hip, to carry a whole fucking life, dimensions unknown, unripe as we all begin. It gets bitter for those who wax to unfruit. They sugared me wide-bore, straight into the jugular. You grained off the ledge into a different silo, briefly suffocated, grew nails to cling. Everything clenched to take its bite. We repeat
the joke. Lay the table together, consent to feed only the mouth that first names every cut.

This one I'm holding as a self-birthday-gift, from Sarah Connor @sarahsouthwest.bsky.social
A poetry book - 'The Poet Spells Her Name', by Sarah Connor. Cover art is a delightful collage by Sarah-Jane Crowson, a misty, eerie moonlit night sea/sky with floating overlays of cutout ghost ship, moths, an eye, a bird, stars. A ghost of curtains frames the book as if viewing the scene on a stage.

FOX

Deciduous snow. Time tissue
perforated along every edge. Lust

routinely followed, throughout her absence

nearly tactile. I withdraw. That part of me,
capable of survival. Licking the killing wound.

'...for a while we live in that strange land of another person's sadness' ~Sugar Magnolia Wilson from The mourning pool (Sweet Mammalian #10 - 2023) #poetry
A poem excerpt in a book, the barest graze of a fingertip holding it open bottom-left. Text:

But tonight is different.
The tannins are leaking out from the new
cedar panels and the water is black enough to hide an injured
Kraken. The moon babies itself up into a lolly-sweet sky and
pulls Venus by a string along with it. And like all the ancient ladies before us, we look up through the arms of the cherry blossom (which are actually insidious weeds) and tell tales of people hurt and dying, despairing, those we don't know who ache and who have lost so much. We try to imagine their grief and for a while we live in that strange land of another person's sadness, and then we recount our own journeys.

'I mean fragile. I mean, it is.' Hey you, off-balance? This one is for you, wherever it, or you, might land today. from ~The Water Engine (2021)
A poem in a book. Deep red fallen peony petals dance the right margin.

Text:

I mean how do we balance at all

At centre you carry the weight / I don't mean a heart but yes chambers liquid
with iron / I don't mean blood I mean restless and betrayed only by being magnetic / your core invisible
to something on the surface
otherwise / I mean a heart is a constant kind
of collision / I mean momentum
dizzies us / sure as a slow leak
in the moon. I mean we tide.
I mean our being off-
balance has flow-
on effects. I don't mean
ory there'd
to be dense / I mean if your heart was different this whole life thing would collapse. I mean fragile. I mean, it is.
