Vikki C. | Childhood
Mostly, I wasted it, in refuse sites bright with strangers’ belongings, throwaways and
condemned vehicles. They are planning to turn the toxic lake into a freshwater reservoir.
Permission granted the summer you left. They will name it Tranquility. Introduce lush
colonies of fish to colour in the stenciled dark. Powdered pellets of sedatives skimming the
water at dusk, to send those creatures to sleep—even as light radiation peaks. The glow must
have been my mother visiting, as promised. She, another site of special scientific interest,
treated too late. Each time those harsh rays shone through her like sabers, I innocently
sketched them around another circle—to make a new sun. Below, an emerald landscape
reaching to meet it, the sprinkler set to a gentle spray. My father walking through the
rainbowed spectrum, as if returning. I would wait—longer than I counted—for his steps to
draw near, for the key to turn in the lock, and amber to pour through the crack, illuminating
the pairs of animal figures, who waited too. The ending was less than he remembers—a
rearrangement of night and TV static, the bent August heat on oily kneecapped roads. Some
alien waterlilies, like retired ballerinas, larger than a man’s fists, overtaking the sidewalks.
Surviving, rootless. Like all other variables, the experts couldn't explain such condition.
Water versus concrete. Truth versus playground. The vapour in those polished mason jars,
never too tightly sealed.

Lost Couplet

When I die, let my body be donated to silence.
The final noise: when I'm clothed in ground.

Sparrows asleep inside a glass violin.
Bells with their throats cut.

The song went: plenty, plenty. I've plenty of bones.

"Certain events of love drew my body nearer to meaning." This beautiful poem 'The Anxiety of Meaning' by Bianca Stone in The Glacier 🤍 @42milespress.bsky.social theglacierjournal.com/issue-three/... #poetrycommunity #poetry
The Anxiety of Meaning

Bianca Stone

Certain events of love
drew my body nearer to meaning.

All poets are liars.
Wrecked against meaning. Starved
on the beach of meaning—

I want to keep your head in a black bag, I said.

Who can distinguish the remembered
from the desired? I know a little
the agony of it. I drew nearer still.

What do I know about getting?
I know my mother turned away.
That I slipped from her body again and again,
tied down in an incubator and punctured
with a life-saving light.

I know that all that time
an ancient poem
was writing itself in the
hallway, where a mask hung on the wall
looking without seeing.

I know I turned away. Can you feel it?
How the head longs to rid the face
of a certain danceless dance. That we were

condemned to dualism at birth.
Dualism is dead.
And long live dualism.

That certain events of love
drew us nearer to mean.
That the heart is chilled
by a tormented wave

that thinks it is not the sea.

Coastal autobiography

I rest in my receding, high-winds pulling each tide
like a hair, glossy and remembered,
feet sinking in rough constellations;
the crayfish’s broken armour
		eclipsed by washed-up jellyfish
translucent, pulsing still.

                               *
As if a knot of nerves is enough
to simplify the loss.
Again, a blue boat wrestles
our wrong weathers.
What will they throw overboard to save themselves?
The cries of birds burn red.

                                 *
Dusk deep inside each clear body,
blood believable. I must not touch.
Even in death, sting still potent,
one hallucinates a side-effect,
salty men backstroking through fog,
a pearlwashed rhythm
             I enter to endure.

Soft Machinery

Drowned lilies in a basin behind chapel doors.
The feeling of a snail crawling down the throat.

Of history, is it the metaphor or the body that dies?
The float of seasons, a widening orbit, the book older and stranger.

Standard are the ways we hurt each other, however slowly it may make us.

“A thought skips ahead, plays out, pauses, starts again.” A poem by Adam Clay.
MIXTAPE ARCHIVE CIRCA 1997

The sun like a hubcap through the clouds
because coarse light can come from
many places. Some scratchy guitar solo
disappears into a wrecked piano, later
tossed to sea. A thought skips ahead, plays
out, pauses, starts again: searching
the cassette for some familiar strain.
I dreamt the middle of the boulevard
was fragmented into gravel and dust,
and sure enough it happened the next day.
The silence between the songs,
it turns out, was all I needed to hear.

C.D. Wright, “Tours”

A girl on the stairs listens to her father
Beat up her mother.
Doors bang.
She comes down in her nightgown.

The piano stands there in the dark
Like a boy with an orchid.

She plays what she can
Then she turns the lamp on.

Her mother's music is spread out
On the floor like brochures.

She hears her father
Running through the leaves.

The last black key
She presses stays down, makes no sound
Someone putting their tongue where their tooth had been.

Louise Glück, from “The Untrustworthy Speaker”
Louise Glück, from “The Untrustworthy Speaker”

Don’t listen to me; my heart’s been broken.
I don’t see anything objectively.

I know myself; I’ve learned to hear like a psychiatrist.
When I speak passionately,
that’s when I’m least to be trusted.

It’s very sad, really: all my life, I’ve been praised
for my intelligence, my powers of language, of insight.
In the end, they’re wasted—

I never see myself,
standing on the front steps, holding my sister’s hand.
That’s why I can’t account
for the bruises on her arm, where the sleeve ends.
