I have never felt as protected from misfortune by a nation state as I have in Spain. I work hard and pay my taxes, and when I fucked up my shoulder, a surprisingly generous welfare state caught me as I fell. 1/

It is essential for the sake of the UK's future as a democracy based on the rule of law that the right does not take power in 2029. Nothing - absolutely nothing - is more important than that.

“The closest thing to the Spanish decree of automatic rent renewal is the system in force in UK since May. It is an advance and it protects a tenant against the worst landlords. But so far it has had little effect on the general problem of prices or scarcity of rentals”

While the death penalty is obviously vile and morally repugnant , it seems astonishing to me that in a country with many drug overdoses, the State of Tennessee is unable to successfully administer a drug overdose.

A fine hare crossed my path on the track up to my house, then squatted down in the field a few metres away. I stopped the car, got out and he didn’t move. I told him just how fine he was, how there is a fox living in the wild quinces. Dog came to meet me and the hare took off.

As all poets surely are rooting for @lukekennard.bsky.social there’s also the attendant terror that maybe a novel is the way out of the ‘dreadfully important nonsense’ that is poetry.

Scenes from the Lives of a Girl
i
The dead leaves clung to the young girl. They leapt
from the earth to clothe her. The linden and the oak,
elm and sycamore. Every time she arrived home she
was met by her exasperated mother moaning about
the leaves’ flaky deposits in her hallway, the baby slugs,
the not completely dead aphids. “Why don’t you brush
them off before you come home?” Her mother presumed
electricity in some static form had a hand. She never
witnessed the looks of astonishment that greeted her
daughter all along the road as leaves swept themselves up
to envelop her, astonishment too deep to rally an insult
or catcall. Astonishment of a kind no emoji exists for.
