This might be the wrong website to ask this, but we're discussing Just War Theory in class this week and I cannot reason myself out of the view that it's all post facto rationalisation to benefit leaders doing whatever they want. Am I being too cynical?

There was a bloom of stories maybe ten years ago about older professors creating problems for the job market by not retiring, and just checking in now to point out that they’ve since retired and almost none of their jobs continue to exist.

We have to stop using "paper count" as a useful scientific metric. More writing output no longer means more knowledge gained www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

One professor’s AI-assisted output: 200 papers and 14 books this year
An online platform removed 257 papers written or co-written by the University of Chicago’s Nicholas Polson after other academics raised questions.

Looking for takes by TCS (Theoretical Computer Science) senior academics/researchers about AI and their discipline/research values. E.g., essays, detailed blog posts. (Specifically TCS: there is a lot from Maths, but while adjacent there are enough differences in culture it's worth distinguishing)

This is very niche. If you have a PhilPeople profile and you click on web analytics, you get a page showing traffic to your profile. Below that is a list of the locations by IP address, and the list includes a little image of the flag of each country your visitor is based in and you can see the tld.

I'm an editor at PhilPapers, so I approve suggestions for adding papers to one of the categories. There's been a huge increase in obvious AI slop uploaded to the database. I'm surprised that more isn't being done to stop it.

As with @ethanlandes.bsky.social, and anyone working in formal stuff, I have also been asked a lot how my work is philosophy. The most amusing time was when someone aggressively asked me “how is the liar paradox philosophy?” Im not sure what his conception of philosophy was that ruled the liar out.

you shouldn’t say that Macbeth murdered Banquo because he “wanted” to be king and “believed” Banquo was going to reveal him. Macbeth doesn’t “want” or “believe” anything, he’s just a fictional character played by an actor reading a script

Do I have any phonologist followers? I've been trying and failing to suss out the difference in US vs UK patterns of stress in multi-part proper names. Am I imagining it, or: US speakers will put heavy stress on the first word: "GREEN bay" UK speakers weigh both roughly equally: "GREEN BAY"

Happened across this unhinged Wittgenstein line
We speak of birds singing. When I was a boy I was bothered in listening to birds, because it obviously isn't singing. Finally someone said to me, "All right, don't call it singing, call it something else"
'. And soon I could listen to birds and enjoy it.
