Wisteria tree at Ashikaga Flower Park, Japan. Photography by KotHat on photohito

Cascading like an ethereal, violet-tinted waterfall from an unseen sky, a curtain of glowing wisteria (fuji) blossoms overhead in a breathtaking nocturnal spectacle. At the base, a thick, ancient trunk twists with muscular grace, its weathered, spiral-grained wood anchoring a vast canopy-like arbor from which countless long, delicate racemes hang in dense, weeping clusters. Soft upward illumination transforms the mass of pale purple and magenta flowers into a luminous, suspended ocean of petals, casting a soft glow onto the petal-strewn earth below. The photograph evokes a dreamy, multi-sensory atmosphere: the sweet, honeyed perfume of evening blossoms heavy in the cool spring night, the faint, rustling whisper of racemes swaying in a gentle breeze, the soft hum of nocturnal garden air, and the quiet, awe-struck hush of standing beneath a ceiling of living light. Captured at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, this magnificent specimen exemplifies the centuries-old Japanese tradition of cultivating grand wisteria arbors (fuji-dana). Cherished since the Heian period as a symbol of nobility, longevity, and refined elegance, wisteria appears throughout classical waka poetry, aristocratic clan crests (kamon), and iconic theater performances such as the kabuki dance Fujimusume ("The Wisteria Maiden"). Preserving a tree of this monumental scale—with branches extending across hundreds of square meters supported by meticulously engineered timber trellises—represents a supreme testament to horticultural monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for living craft). Through generations of dedicated pruning, binding, and care, Japanese arborists have elevated landscape architecture into a living, intergenerational fine art.

Rare to catch such a warm, breezy day in SF for a stroll. Shadows falling on the walls, ocean breeze sweeping through the pier, and dogs and people walking in from afar—all wrapped in a beautiful golden glow. So lovely. #SanFrancisco #FerryBuilding #Sunset #GoldenHour #Pier

Meet #Waterfall, a mixed media work of #art that incorporates (yep, you guessed it) dried weeds. Why not, right? And the background paper is recycled from an earlier copy of my favorite #TaoTeChing

Here is BirdSong: Blue Jay. She is one of 3 abstract bird nests I created for a recent gallery installation. I am truly thrilled she was both accepted and then nominated (for first place) in this curated international online exhibition. Wow, just wow! www.no35gallery.co.uk/group-exhibi...

BirdSong: Blue Jay
Wings, Birds and Flight
International Online Exhibition

As an intuitive mixed-media artist, I follow colors and geometries that catch my attention. In this mixed media work, I wove a textural nest of fabric, yarns, and Blue Jay feathers. My sculptural and 3D artworks from a range of materials, such as tree bark, dried tea buds, sheep wool, bamboo threads and papers of all textures. In all cases, I step into each process as a communion often with NO IDEA of what will happen when the conversation begins or when it will end.

Finding work after being made redundant (twice) in one's 50s is way harder than I could ever have imagined. Coming to the conclusion that ageism – something about which I cared very little in my 20s – is not only real but demoralising.
