for today’s #weirdpoemwednesday (extremely complimentary), here is Clare Kelly in Keep Planning ➰
Pantheon

lisping sullen on the tide
a funny end to the dream vacation

a nest of three joined redwood trunks
speak to me in rainbows
source of all our loveliness

remove the veils o statues
dust on a sliver of the light

I am diamond-minded
down a jade green velvet tunnel

the perfect apple still believes in bananas

o irises in the field
look how they spin!

For #WeirdPoemWednesday, @tomsnarsky.bsky.social, here is Q&A:
Q&A

Q. How thou come aside this fizzled gristled day?

A. With hatchets and cleavers, said no one ever
     said everyone never.

A. Yet again, A. Here cometh clammy pulchritude.
     Hoist your items, chillun.

CATTLE NEAR BEAVER BROOK

Cattle wander to the barbed edge of the pasture,
Their scruffed autumn coats as thick as sofa stuffing.
White-faced large calm heads chew and stare at me.
A low sun slathers them in palomino light.

Swallows transmit themselves through air—
The wings pump silence. Glossy caucusing crows,
delegates from the corn lobby, break for their districts.
All at the same time, the cattle blink and turn.

Vast and grey, the sky
is a simulacrum
to all but him whose days
are vast and grey, and—
In the tall, dried grasses
a goat stirs
with nozzle searching the ground.
—my head is in the air
but who am I…?
And amazed my heart leaps
at the thought of love
vast and grey
yearning silently over me.

As he walks by
Must've been a professor of philosophy

Who despite changed circumstances
Still opens his beak
From time to time
As if to address his adoring students, And seeing nothing but snow,
Looks up puzzled
At one of the dark windows.

Land

Land, how much misery
you've brought to your people.
They're wretched when they have you,
wretched when they lose you.

Land, if only
we could inhabit the clouds.Lost

That which is lost for forever,
that which that no one knows
but me–
I want you to know it too.
If it's lost but you know it
it's as if
it was never lost.

My hands are open,
and in every home I pour it out–
the childhood
I once had.

Sprachspiel

a man dreams of rain
it is raining outside
rain falls into his dream

suppose he is right
neither crackle of grease
nor so much clapping

his dream-self says aloud
it is raining outside
as he mouths it silently

supposing there is sleep
and two voices between
where did the words go

I want to be a passenger
in your car again
and shut my eyes
while you sit at the wheel,
awake and assured
in your own private world,
seeing all the lines
on the road ahead,
down a long stretch
of empty highway
without any other
faces in sight.
I want to be a passenger
in your car again
and put my life back
in your hands.

Before the Dancers,

their shadows.
Before the fire, the hanging

the page. Before death, sleep—
or was it death, then sleep?
Maybe I've had it wrong all along:
maybe the dancers, then their shadows.

Field Document

I saw a woman on fire,
how she was burning,
I saw nothing like smoke,
only the eyes in a flame
clear like thought
never is. You can hear
this and not believe it
and she will not care.
Her eyes, though, do
see it all, finally.

Ox Eric Pankey
The onion and the sweet grass are chewed the same —
Again, efficiently. And it is that care,
The sure thoroughness, the calm depending
As much on the beast’s weight as it does on will,
The slow circuit its blood takes, that we admire.
It does not care for the twenty words we’ve saved
For it. It does not care that steadiness
Is its burden. In its dull language, the ox
Says little. If it chose to mock us it would
Do so with such a subtlety
That we’d miss it as we raised the whip or pitched
Moldy hay from the sharpened tines of a fork.
Here, we’d say. Here. This is for you alone. Here.

Paul Bowles, from The Sheltering Sky
“Before I was twenty, I mean, I used to think that life was a thing that kept gaining impetus. It would get richer and deeper each year. You kept learning more, getting wiser, having more insight, going further into the truth—” She hesitated.
Port laughed abruptly. “And now you know it’s not like that. Right? It’s more like smoking a cigarette. The first few puffs it tastes wonderful, and you don’t even think of its ever being used up. Then you begin taking it for granted. Suddenly you realize it’s nearly burned down to the end. And then’s when you’re conscious of the bitter taste.”
“But I’m always conscious of the unpleasant taste *and* of the end approaching,” she said.
“Then you should give up smoking.”

JUST THINK

Suppose this really were
happening to you
so that a screen
repeated every swollen move
a second after its enactment—

how would that feel,
reel upon reel
compelling as the notion of
your children growing older
when you stared at one just then,

that you’re illuminated by
some mystery
almost infinitely
smaller than your self,
the square you
could never make it through
at the back of the theater.

Chris Abani 💙 An “ordinary” Wednesday poem for #weirdpoemwednesday! @tomsnarsky.bsky.social
Poet of an Ordinary Heartbreak

Who hasn't been tempted by the sharp edge of a knife?
An ordinary knife cutting ordinary tomatoes on an ordinary slab of wood on an ordinary Wednesday.
The knife nicks, like a bite to the soul. A reminder that what is contemplated is as real as the blood sprouting from a finger. As real as a bruised eye.
Instead turn back to the meat stewing on the stove.
Scrape pulpy red flesh into the heat and turn.
Say: even this is a prayer. Even this.

today for #twopageplustuesday, another poem by Carl R. Martin: “Poe ambling through streets of Baltimore in the drunk election crowd/ or the donkey whose tail stands up, his profile that belies the moon. […] I have no promises to keep except to love & die & dream,/ to tend the dryads in the trees…”
PERCHANCE
"Ambling with intent not pursuant to criminal acts."
Poe ambling through streets of Baltimore in the drunk election crowd or the donkey whose tail stands up, his profile that belies the moon.
In a rooming house for single girls Poe's silhouette is on the block.
Winter is cold, protectors scarce, "romance" is not in command.
Milk is pay. With heads unshorn the poor are "beastly dead" whom horse-drawn hearses ferry out among the witching trees.
The donkey's head is on the block, resurrection is his fate.
Branches drift within the sky; bloomers are hanging in the trees softly blown in wild, earthy directions home.
The woods are gentle, dark, and deep, and I'm forever half asleep since I discovered midnight's seams where truth's awry.
I have no promises to keep except to love & die & dream, to tend the dryads in the trees who are far lovelier than leaves and do not hold to chopping wood.
I know these ethics seem at fault, but think of such adventurers that made the ruddy Hudson seem like some dense Amazonian stream in oils that may yet amaze, somewhat restored, a bit less crazed.
Even the dream must suffer art, a meticulous eternity through privileged forays of the brush where wild birds treat the canvassed slough with soothing chemistry and song (excuse the Brit vernacular) and grant it lasting threads of life.
Mark Twain became the white-haired cigar-wielding swainwho preferred his Hartford sitting room, exclusively by Tiffany, and did not hold to chopping wood.
Perchance to dream: fleetingly obscene and thoroughly American.Rogue Hemlocks by Carl Martin
