On an early date / we take the train to the nearby pebble-lined coast / hold hands to stop from falling /
as we

wobble-walk over an unmade bed of smooth stones / the clack / the whoosh of the lapping tide / like our hearts /

bowled over / doe-eyed / our tongues unexplored / wildflower-fringed pathways / meet then widen

On the way home/ we eat strawberries from a mesh covered punnet / at the back of a rickety bus / I still

remember / the bumps that lifted us off our seats / as we struggled / to put the bright red fruits in our mouths / take

photos together / our uninhibited laughs /hit of full-bodied sweetness / followed by that tiny tang of

acidity / petals / falling from our lips

FOR LOVE, WE ATTEMPT ANOTHER ARS POETICA

To choose to live in this world,
blue or otherwise. That is what I tell the poet who tries

so hard to write the best opening. To creep naked into winter
without a word of evolution. For now, my new meds

save you the trouble of visiting—meaning
estrangement is a spare room not worth its view.

All year, waves break against alien rocks, wrong and spectacular.
And our secret isn’t how we left it, smothered with flowers,

but figuratively it’s there—as we are—asking:
How can the poem thrive without my anxiety?

Evening piles its tricks over my body, daring me
to leave you again. Spoon-feeding me to its damp glitter,

where abeyance is a far suspension bridge. I think of that mother
who couldn’t bear to stay on Earth, when Earth was still home.

How her orphaned daughter grew up not-a-poet—choosing a different
art altogether—painting a dead bird’s wings to obsession.

Flames of white feathers. Feathers of white flames. No matter the myth,
the irony after rising—is the fear of heights. Where questions on the

mechanics of breath happen to be mine. Will the rope soften too?
How much sky is true and available?

How will I lower myself, without missing you?

You said this was what I left you for:
one for each eyelid,
one for each spent flower.

The sound of the ocean
outside the window --
Venice, California,
close to Rose and Lincoln.

I felt my past blooming
like rare night jasmine,
rising, scented in the hills;

and all the time you hoped
I would hold you

with songs -

ones we might write on each other's bodies.
Could the stars ever stir,
if the stars could ever stir

I have holes of light flooding my body. When Father asked me in which direction we should proceed, I said let’s head to the sassafras trees at the South Shore Point. When mother said to me, Oh look, the rose in the glass by the window is dying, I held my hand out and gave her another one. I spit the skin of the milk from the glass into the fireplace. Mother played Chopin on the black and white keys of her beige piano. Every baby born on New Year’s after midnight is photographed. I remember you said, you were one of them. That was many years ago. They lined three babies up in front of a birthday cake. You kept the photograph that appeared in the New Year’s day edition of the daily newspaper, and kept it between dictionary pages like one would an autumn leaf. Father said, A fool can make a joke out of their own person. I was never completely sure what he meant. Rose stems, thorns on a plant that never bloomed. Standing still by snow-covered ledges, tiny crowns, the webbed feet of crows, drawing in graphite on a folio, exploring haptic lines, a cluster of melodies, a cartography of memories.
