In trauma recovery I find it's useful to have rehearsed what we're gonna say to ourselves when it gets hard, when Trauma Brain kicks in & makes a "convincing" case that continuing to live isn't worth it. We don't want to be trying to improv that inner support if we can help it.

We struggle. No need to deny it or downplay it. But that's not the only thing that's happening here if we're working our trauma recovery. If we're working our recovery, our pain isn't pointless. We're not just struggling, we're transitioning. Changing. Realistically bodybuilding.

If someone else learned it, we can learn a version of it. Maybe not the exact version they mastered, but our version, that fits our needs & accommodates our injuries. Emotional regulation is realistically figure-outable, even if it doesn't come natural to us. (It doesn't to me.)

Sexual experimentation, identity, history, or preference does not make anyone undeserving of safety, autonomy, dignity, or support in coping w/ something traumatic that happened to them.

The people who don't understand how seriously we need to take emotional regulation & daily goal setting in our trauma & addiction recovery were never going to be our most reliable recovery supports anyway. If they don't get it, they don't get it. Ah well. Work your recovery.

There is no shame in struggling w/ emotional regulation. Truly. It's one of the most complicated life skillsets we humans require, & most of the people we meet every day haven't actually mastered it-- they've just developed various levels of denial & unhealthy "coping."

Trauma recovery isn't built in a day, it's built every day-- w/ small, realistic shifts in how we talk to ourselves, how we direct our mental focus, & how we breathe & use our body. None of what recovery asks of us is beyond us in this moment. Really. Breathe. Blink. Focus.

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Our abusers & bullies robbed us of the opportunity to live a little, unexamined life that only required basic, intuitive emotional regulation skills. Sorry, but that option is not on the table for most survivors. We're forced to live, & love, & strive, intentionally, every day.

Having a great day doesn't mean we're out of the woods in trauma recovery, & having a sh*tty day doesn't mean we're back where we started. Easy does it. Whatever today is, we meet it w/ realism & compassion & skill, & manage it hour by hour, minute by minute.

Many trauma survivors have a specific reaction to the evening, as day turns into night-- vulnerability to dissociation & depression can spike, even without an identifiable trigger. Notice it, don't overreact, be ready w/ strategies & tools. It's a known thing.

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Well, you could go out of your way to tell yourself, in excruciating detail, how "weak" you are, & elaborate on what you "should" have done-- & that will serve your trauma recovery how? That'll affect your mood & energy & motivation how? Self talk & mental focus are tools.

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Being kind to yourself doesn't mean you have to be sugary & syrupy & cringey w/ your self talk. Don't think self-compassion means you have to talk to yourself like a children's show if that's not you. Your self talk can be darker & grittier without being self-assaultive.

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Telling yourself it's "okay" to struggle or fail doesn't mean you're "giving up." It means you're realistically managing the result you just got without setting fire to the project. Our trauma conditioning wants us to get dramatic & give up-- but we don't have to.

Hey, you, trauma survivor feeling like you're "in trouble" for some vaguely defined reason right now as you read this. I don't know if you're actually "in trouble" w/ anyone at the moment-- but I do know you deserve support, care, & safety, no matter what's going on. I see you.

We're not going to "motivate" ourselves through recovering from CPTSD. This isn't a "motivation" thing. This is a "stick w/ yourself" thing. A "be on your own side" thing. A "have your own back thing." This is about commitment & skill, not "motivation."
04310
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
CPTSD is not primarily about what happened to us. It's about how what happened to us turned us into someone we didn't choose. The "just get over it" people don't understand that. We don't "just get over" who we've become. We have to recondition, rewire, reshape ourselves.

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
It can feel enormously weird to exist in a body & life we feel does not match who we really are-- but that's what CPTSD & DID do. Symptoms like self harm & suicidal ideation are often desperate attempts to escape this unfamiliar, suffocating haze we feel we're trapped in.
06215
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Of course we feel desperate & alone-- no one teaches us how to realistically set goals or build a life when our entire conscious experience feels uncomfortable & "wrong." Realistic trauma recovery starts from scratch, w/ "who am I?" & "what's the point?"-- which is intimidating.
05715
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Trauma survivors can be MERCILESS w/ ourselves, telling ourselves EVERYTHING we feel or need is a "dramatic" "burden" we're imposing on someone else (even if we're alone in a room eating crackers). And right now someone's reading this thinking "OK, but I really AM that burden."

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Thing is: your emotional & physical needs may or may not be "higher maintenance" than average-- but the complexity of what you feel & need has absolutely ZERO to do w/ whether you deserve support & understanding, or your value as a person. You're worthy EVEN IF you're a hassle.
05713
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
There is no need to deny that your needs are complex, & you require very specific kinds of support. You are not less worthy because of your needs. The culture around us loves a good "fawn" response & will pressure you to feel ashamed, but I need you to remember the truth.
06312
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
CPTSD is going to try to freak you out about all the care & attention you need, psychologically &/or medically. It's real important you stay focused on just the next thing, w/ compassion & realism. I know it's hard, but reel it in. Breathe; blink; & focus just the next thing.

Only ever engage your past to the extent it impacts your willingness & ability to function in the present. Sustainable trauma recovery doesn’t focus on the past, because we cannot change the past. It focuses on what we CAN change. What we DO have influence (not "control") over.
37414
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
We cannot change the past. We CAN change our relationship with the past-- & our relationship w/ the version of ourselves who endured it. We do it the same way we change any relationship: by managing our communication, focus, & boundaries in those relationships.

Don’t get up in your head about the word “trauma.” Use or don’t use it. It actually doesn’t matter. What does matter is you’re clear and consistent about what RECOVERY is all about: protecting & nurturing your safety, stability, & functioning. Here, now, & going forward.

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Don’t get me wrong: we are humans, & humans sometimes contribute to our own pain. It happens. But t’s also the case that trauma tries to bully us into taking WAY more “responsibility” for our pain & dysfunction than is realistic or useful.
15411
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The good news is, we don’t always have to “feel” the self-love. But we do always have to BEHAVE toward ourselves as if we’re on our own side. We do have to talk to ourselves in ways that are starkly different from how our bullies & abusers talked to us.
1509
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It’s my experience that trauma survivors, as a rule, will do triple backflips through flaming hoops to avoid being “controlled” by anything— including fear. For many of us, if we feel afraid of something, we process that as a challenge: we absolutely MUST do the thing, now.

Your quality of life is important enough to not spend one more second than necessary tolerating a person or a situation that makes you feel like sh*t. No matter what that voice from your past is whispering in your ear— or screaming in your face— as you read this.

Hey. We're dialing back the people pleasing at our own expense by .01% today. Think of it as the same sh*t you did yesterday, just a little less. No one's asking you to make seismic changes today-- just prove to yourself a .01% shift is doable & safe. This is how we recover.
17919
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
There is no version of realistic trauma recovery that is going to require you to deny & disown ugly realities or how hard this all is. We can realistically grow a whole new self, but we have to do it from the dirt we're in right now. And we can. You can.
16712
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
People want what they want, & many of them are not going to care about our experiences, needs, or recovery. That's reality. It means we're alone in a very specific way in this world-- & that can actually be the good news. "Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose."
1498
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Trauma recovery is about staying focused on the patterns & tools necessary to create a life you like. Don't overcomplicate it. Don't think you need a blinding, dramatic "breakthrough" moment today. This is about realistic quality of life, day by day, hour by hour. Easy does it.
0589
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Getting us to make "jokes" about ourselves that reinforce bullsh*t trauma conditioning is one of Trauma Brain's sneakiest tricks. Remember Trauma Brain is the internalized voices of our abusers & bullies-- & remember how they used "just jokes" to kneecap our self-esteem.
15511
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The fact that our trauma recovery is on us doesn't mean we're only hurting because we somehow caused or "let" our trauma to happen or to hurt us. Recovery is undeniably about fixing sh*t we did not break, & that is undeniably unfair. It's also the hand we've been dealt.

I take responsibility: not for what happened to me, nor how it injured me; but for how I talk to myself today; how I direct my mental focus or "spotlight" today; & how I breathe & use my body today. I forgive myself for my reactions, & take responsibility for my responses.

I promise you: trauma survivors will break out of every box you try to put us in, literal or otherwise. You have never met a human more hell bent on not feeling controlled or trapped than a survivor recovering from complex trauma.

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Your experience, your needs, & your recovery don't have to make sense to "them." If we hold our trauma recovery hostage to "their" understanding, we're running the old "fawn" pattern again. And that pattern doesn't get us where we need to go. Not anymore.

Hey you, person who thinks nobody likes you or is on your side. I may not know you-- so this may not mean much-- but I think you deserve the benefit of the doubt. I'd take you as you are & see the best in you if we did meet. I hope something helps you feel good today.

Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Scrambling our old "fawn" pattern doesn't happen all at once or w/ one big decision. It's all about noticing when it's happening, pushing pause, taking a breath-- & having a prerehearsed alternative (both self-talk & behavior) to divert to. Again, & again, & again.

Remember that CPTSD can both mimic & exacerbate symptoms of ADHD, OCD, & even bipolar disorder. There is no psychiatric or behavioral struggle that isn't better understood by factoring in the role trauma may play-- & sometimes understanding the trauma piece can be live saving.

CPTSD survivors will find ways to blame ourselves for everything from global warming to our cousin Fred from Albuquerque stubbing his toe last Tuesday. Trauma Brain gets CREATIVE in how it blames us-- & bizarrely passionate & persuasive as it tries to convince us it 's all true.
0637
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
You & I are more vulnerable to emotional dysregulation than your average bear. It sucks, but it's true. We can deny & disown that fact; or we can beat the sh*t out of ourselves for it; or, we can accept & realistically manage it, without the drama CPTSD wants to evoke in us.

Be kind to yourself today as you do that thing you don't feel like doing, you don't feel competent to do, or you've been putting off so long you're embarrassed about it now. Imagine what I'd tell you if I was on your shoulder as you do the thing. Probably not "you suck."
09119
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
This is a reminder to every trauma survivor reading, that your life is actually allowed to be about you-- what you want, what you need, what you experienced. No need to be embarrassed or ashamed. You're not "selfish" for prioritizing you, being curious about you, loving you.
213626
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Let yourself hope. Not in some touchy feely, abstract, warm & fuzzy way. Let your hope be gritty & realistic. Let it not have to f*ck w/ denial or compartmentalization. Trauma recovery is a dark ride-- but the hope that fuels it truly is grounded in science & experience.
07213
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
The reason CPTSD wields the "fuck it's" as a tool to make us feel like garbage is, our brain is literally, physically responsive to how we talk to ourselves. Every time we say "f*ck it" & abandon ourselves in a small way, it shapes our neural networks, & makes recovery harder.
1497
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Many of the things we're going to have to do to take care of ourselves, we're going to do w/ an imperfect attitude-- & you know what? That's fine. I don't need you cheerful & whistling while you keep yourself alive. Trauma & recovery suck. Have an attitude. And, do the stuff.
0689
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Triggers will always be there. They won't always f*ck w/ us as much as they do now, but there will always be triggers. We can't stake our trauma recovery in avoiding or removing all triggers from our world. The only security we CAN develop is having our back through ANY trigger.
0454
Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle @drdoylesays.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Remember today you are creating a life that isn't centered on trauma or recovery per se-- you're creating a life that uses recovery as a frame & toolbox, that lets you focus on & experience what you ACTUALLY want to think about. A life that looks & feels like you & your values.
