Since I'm up early and killing time before the early train, let's talk about why the Boston Globe's coverage of changes to roads in Somerville stinks, because it's been framed entirely as "making it harder to drive in Somerville." As a long-time car owner in Somerville, no, it hasn't.

So hard to pick! I’d say The VVitch, Suspiria, and any of Guillermo’s stuff (Crimson Peak is my personal favorite). And I don’t consider it horror, necessarily, but I’d also nominate A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
A scene from Crimson Peak. Mia Wasikowska has long, wavy blonde hair, a flowing white nightgown with gigantic puffy sleeves, and she’s carrying a silver candelabra. She’s walking fearfully through a dark, imposing gothic bedroom.A scene from The VVitch. A Pilgrim family sits around a dinner table with heads bowed in prayer. The dark room is lit only by the single candle on the table. The father is seated at the head of the table, and holds his hands outstretched to his sides as he prays aloud over their meager supper. The tableau is very Caravaggesque.A scene from the 70s Suspiria. A brunette white woman in a knit sweater with bell sleeves and a keyhole top tied underneath her jugular notch. She has a concerned, slightly fearful look on her face, and she’s bathed in a sickly green light, contrasting with the red-lit dreamy mural painting behind her.One of the opening scenes of the black-and-white film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. A young Iranian woman stands on a sidewalk across the street from the figure in the foreground. The nighttime industrial setting behinds her is barren, save from a warehouse wall and the chain link fence surrounding it. She’s wearing a chador that’s open in the front, revealing her white and black mariner stripe shirt, long pants, and hightop sneakers. She stares ominously but stoically at the foreground figure. She isn’t afraid, because she’s a vampire.

A customer just tried to use an employee discount code that ChatGPT gave her. I work at a high-end clothing store and clocked in to my manager telling me about the most unhinged interaction from yesterday. A woman walked in asking if she could use a 40% off code she got online. We don't have any sales running, so my manager looks at the screen and realizes ChatGPT straight up handed this woman a real employee's internal ID number.

I can’t emphasize this enough — “AI” wasn’t born corrupt and toxic. For ~75 years, it was mathematicians and scientists doing interesting, thoughtful work and trying to solve problems, making only the usual human mistakes. What “AI” did to machine learning is as tragic as what it did to artists.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.
