Quite difficult to obscure just how radicalised and extreme this stuff is, which is awkward because we have been told in no uncertain terms that it's actually *opposing* it that's the violent extremist position. Bit of a pickle, make no mistake.

This is a fantastic brief essay in how news media & pundits turn upside down who is who is being punished for speaking freely--in the case of Kraft, Macklemore, & Sheeran--when rich elites want things to go one way, but unruly peasant masses refuse to go along. www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2026/se...

Regular reminder that self described Nazi Nina Power is still a part of the far-right “Free Speech Union”, after her failed SLAPP suit against one of her critics. The Orwellian named “Free Speech Union” hates freedom of speech, instead they want the far right to have exclusive speech privileges.

Having some friends who are immigrants in Germany, this is just a bald-faced lie, both regarding public discourse, and the general sentiment. Regarding the latter, the situation is getting so bad they’re even contemplating emigrating again, even though they’re the “correct” kind of immigrants.

On August 12, 1958, fifty-seven of the world's most influential jazz musicians gathered in Harlem and took what's considered the most iconic photo in jazz history. When 2026 opened, Sonny Rollins was the last living before passing almost 4 months ago. Today would've been his 96th birthday
The iconic photo "A Great Day In Harlem," taken in 1958.

It features both the original photo with added color and the names of all 57 musicians.

The "Saxophone Colossus" Sonny Rollins can be seen along the immediate right center as the last living member

The far-right UK “Free Speech Union” still has Nina Power, who ineffectually tried to silence criticism with the help of state power, as one of their people. This is not uncommon, Toby Young has a history of cheering on SLAPP lawsuits from rightwingers trying to silence their opposition.

The value of Graham Platner is that right up until all his red flags came toppling down upon him is that he is the most naked example of the amount of grace & credibility Simply Being White grants you. Compared to Abdul El-Sayed, who has to re-earn every ounce of credibility he has on a daily basis.

Is that...is that supposed to be an argument against healthcare
Darline Graham, new Republican candidate for Senate in South Carolina, told a crowd last night that government-run health care is a terrible idea and then told everyone her parents had to work at their liquor store even if they were sick, and her mother and father died when she was 11 and 12, respectively. Apparently as an argument against healthcare.

here's how Cofnas supporters uphold their own professed principles
Patrick Sturgis
Jonathan you are a Pratt. A Pratt who thinks he's far smarter than he is. And moreover a Pratt who doesn't understand or support the essential principle of Academic Freedom. I see little point in engaging with you further.

Sam Freedman
Why not answer his Q? I'm also curious. How do you want us to engage academically with this claim? Or Cofnas's claim that black people hold too many positions of influence in the US?

Patrick Sturgis
How about refuting them on theoretical and empirical grounds? That is kind of how science works. It doesn't work by calling people names, refusing to engage with their claims and attempting to get them fired.

I have drawn arrows from "Jonathan you are a Pratt" in the first post and "calling people names" in the last, and "I see little point in engaging with you" in the first post and "refusing to engage" in the last.

Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...
Axios: AI has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.

Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books — a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane — makes it easy to lose the thread. AI can help you pick it back up without starting over.
📖 I really got into using AI while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

"I'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

Theodore SchleiferReporting on super PACs and the midterm elections

Much of the conventional wisdom had been that the $32 million in American Israel Public Affairs Committee spending for Haley Stevens came at a political cost for her in Michigan. Perhaps it did. But given how close the race between Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and Stevens ended up being, a few people have brought up to me this afternoon the possibility that AIPAC might have been smart to actually spend even a little more, so as to push her over the top.

a reason that Stevens lost and other AIPAC candidates are losing despite the huge infusions of money is that Dem voters don't want to vote for a candidate who is funded by the same org who will immediately turn around and fund the Republicans
