Which makes me wonder to what extent the SCOTUS Republicans are just doing a more genteel version of Trump's core fuckup: they think they are now our Guardian Council and have no idea how to actually build legitimacy for authoritarian rule, ignorantly leaping off a bridge thinking they can fly.

Lot of ink being spilled over what is almost certainly just a quirk of how Trump talks. Trying to downplay the significance of selling arms to Taiwan he points out that we sell to lots of people. Very on brand for him to keep running his mouth and “offer” to sell to Xi just to reinforce his point.

Absolutely find a way to liberate HBO and stick Ellison with the debt. Liberate WaPo, liberate the Times, make them employee coops with three board seats for subscribers.

I'm reminded of one of my favorite passages in Banerjee and Duflo's "Good Economics for Hard Times". "The goal of social policy, in these times of change and anxiety, is to help people absorb the shocks that affect them without allowing those shocks to affect their sense of themselves.."

i remember reading someone suggest that we smuggle effective open borders into the appearance of Order by just physically requiring presentation at checkpoints where you stand in a big line. i'm not sure this is the right idea but i think necessity of the theatre to sell it is weirdly accurate

all of the following are true: -99% open borders is the best immigration policy for the US and the world -voters will never allow this to happen -open borders or ICE gestapo is a false dichotomy -general amnesty is the only possible solution for current illegal immigrants

I *think* what’s going on is the West has a threefold conception of the self: mind, body, soul While “soul” has fallen out of favor, people intuitively think about “the mind” as being separate from “the body,” and that becomes internalized as “the mind isn’t a physical thing”

It's often a lot of work to explain, in your own words, how a position has been established. People, knowing this, will ask that of their interlocuters in bad faith trying to exhaust them so they can use the absence of a response to suggest they're right. So...

Slight elaboration: a huge amount of poverty reduction in the last 50 years has been entirely down to China and India being better-run. But once you pick that fruit you're left with a lot of African countries still living in the fallout of the worst type of colonialism.

What’s that? You’re missing epistemic gatekeepers who would place complex facts in context? Tough shit

when I hear someone say something like this I generally assume it’s just vibe history, an endorsement of an imagined version of a historical figure they have substituted in their head for the real one. like when Italians are excited for Columbus it’s for the mythical figure not for the genocide
