There's a version of that which I favor and am glad we already have!

Yeah I think that's just a bad rule. I'm also against the American avoidance of logical punctuation

Yes, but in this specific case it's anti-parental-rights anyway because it's about abrogating the parents' rights to fend off the grandparents

I'm not worried because the tilted ones clearly aren't squares at all, their sides are too jagged. Better luck scaring me next time, math!

I mean, that's the implicit logic if streaming anyway. If you only want to pay for what you want, you can (almost certainly) still buy it separately from having a recurrent subscription

I bet you also think we should inject people with miniature versions of diseases, even though (1) that definitely sounds like it would make you sicker and (2) "hey let's get jabbed by needles" sounds dumb for a REASON

Is it the knowing, or the ignorance? I would find "people are cranky because it's hot out and they refuse to hear some egghead tell them why" considerably more plausible than "people are angry because they know climate change is serious"; the latter would result in environmentalist politicians, no?

It's tempting to assuming that ine simple reason is the lack of serious industrialization, because absent that it's hard to imagine how the state provides everything for everyone

The point is just that a lot of them aren't white and aren't motivated by a coherent racist worldview

"You didn't vote for Trump and your community has always supported good, woke values" is a very worthy lie in my book, if you can get away with it

Right, but that doesn't mean a sufficient excuse would have necessarily occured at just the right time with just the right presumed credibility.

It's definitely similar. If some study spread around the web that "proved" vaccines are secretly just saltwater placebos, antivaxers would cry vindication even though it would make no sense

Both Paxton and Roy Moore's flaws are representative of their party's values, but there was a lot more incentive to say otherwise in the latter case. Can they really disown Paxton as easily as Moore?
000
Lenoxus @lenoxus.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Will they? Like, the blue-drain effect thing is usually presented more as a joke than an actual justification for nimbyism

If the GOP has a hard choice between Texas and the Senate, I don't think it's strictly wrong for them to reject the former for the latter (A counterpoint is that the Senate is so biased that losing it just once isn't the same kind of deal as it is for Dems — the GOP just has to wait two years)

I genuinely wonder if a campaign that literally just says, with no winking, "You didn't vote for him, it's okay" would have a salutary effect

Everyone mocks Pauline Kael not knowing any Nixon voters but there are plenty of people who literally voted for him but post-Watergate actually neither they nor their social circle ever did, wouldn't you know it

Right, but if the hour is shifted to the afternoon, then that's effectively more golf time, because both broadcast tournaments and casual play want to occur after the workday

The senators with long memories recall 1974, when we actually passed the same basic law — universal DST — and retracted it the same year because of the safety concern of kids getting up during the dark. (Yet another thing ruined by cars.)

Do very small children "actually" socialize or just imitate it?

It does? The grammar doesn't seem that way, it would have to be specified in the prompt

There's a lot of potential for a science fiction story in which a complex agent (or maybe humanity in general) comes to realize it has spent its life outputting "self-aware" data that has nothing to do with its actual experiences and are the effective equivalent of exhaling

Even if it is conscious (I think not), we can't be sure that it's correct for us to infer its "thoughts" from the plain meanings of the words it produces, in the same way it's a mistake to think cats are "actually" always feeling the kind of emotions that their unsmiling faces suggest to us humans

This is implicitly an argument for security through obscurity. And maybe that's valid! Perhaps it's correct to say that a certain level of obscurity was fundamentally good; that just hasn't been the security consensus normally

Who counts as a weird monk for these purposes, though? At some level this gets into the same issues as reddit atheism and the refusal to cut Good Ones exceptions, just applied to rationalism rather than religion. (I say that without a firm commitment on what if anything is good or bad there)

But then, the same principle applies to human art and its inspiration! I think that, beyond all the soul stuff snd the "what is art" stuff, a lot of the current distress about current machine capacity is rooted in uninterrogated notions of Lone Creative Genius
